This is illustrated in the following description of the routines for a number of different cases of software handling. The relation between the different development, planning and production phases for the software are summarized in fig. 2. This is perhaps best exemplified by the fact that when AKE 13 is to be introduced on a new market, it is usually only necessary to design 5 to 10 new blocks out of the total of 100 to 150 blocks in the exchange. (The actual number of blocks in the exchange varies according to its complexity.) Moreover, the new blocks can very often be obtained by modifying a previously designed block. The remaining blocks are selected from about 400 existing blocks. Of these about 200 are special for certain markets, while the remainder can be used on a large number of markets. Despite a planned expansion of new (system) functions and new markets only a very moderate growth of the product assortment is foreseen, and the present relationship between market-dependent and general blocks is likely to be maintained. The above confirms that the requirements for general application and adaptability are fulfilled satisfactorily. Standardization also improves the reliability of the software. Finally it can be said that the efforts that have been and are being devoted to handling routines, support system and organization are more than justified. Creation of the program package The software is delivered in the form of separate program packages for each exchange, and contains only functions that are relevant for the exchange in question. Up-to-date exchange data for traffic routes, routing etc. are added when the package is loaded. When the exchange is put into service aftera comprehensive function change, or after a large extension, a complete package is provided.
