Ken Wright
y recent trip to Oregon’s Willamette Valley provided first-hand
“Mconfirmation that the 2008 vintage has produced a bevy of excellent
Pinot Noirs that will appeal both to patient collectors and to those
who can’t keep their hands off young, exuberantly fruity wines… nearperfect
conditions ultimately allowed for harvesting to occur at a relatively
leisurely place, under cool, dry condition. Producers were able to
pick with unusual precision and vinify smaller lots… bottom line, as far
as what is—or should be—in the bottle is complex and energetic wines
without roasted character which is exactly what most Pinot lovers crave…
Compared to the prices commanded by most upper-tier producers in
California, many of the best 2008 Oregon Pinots are going to look like
relative bargains… ” Josh Raynolds, Steve Tanzer’s International Wine
Review
“In the 2008s, you’ve got the best vintage Oregon has ever produced, the
kind of vintage Oregon winemakers always hoped they could produce.”
Wine Spectator
“… What appears to be a top vintage 2008, waiting in barrel.” Wine
Advocate
“It means that you want the just-now-appearing 2008 vintage Oregon
Pinot Noirs. (It’s very possibly Oregon’s best across-the-board Pinot
vintage in decades, thanks to unusually low yields and perfect fall
weather, as well as increased winemaking skill.)” Matt Kramer,
Wine Spectator
“The 2008 vintage in Oregon has been highly touted with some
vintners claiming it is the best vintage for Oregon Pinot Noir in
this decade, or even in Oregon’s modern 50+ year winegrowing
history. I know that we have heard this shouting before from
wineries, but based on the many 2008 Oregon Pinot Noirs I
have sampled, this is no shallow hype.” PinotFile
Ron Junge, Christian Moueix, proprietor
he California outpost of the Moueix family (in this case
“Twinemaker and manager of Château Petrus and other
luminary estates in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, Christian
Moueix), Dominus is celebrating nearly twenty years in Napa
Valley. Christian Moueix has to be pleased with what he has
achieved. First of all, he owns one of northern California’s
historic vineyards. Even wines from vintages about which he
is less than enthusiastic (1983 through 1989) have brilliantly
stood the test of time, and show no signs of following apart.
His greatest wines to date have been the colossal 1991 and 1994, but he has hit the
bull’s eye with an extraordinary 2002 and impressive 2003. And, let’s not forget the
muscular, high octane 2001.
These wines are singular in character, tasting incredibly French-like, especially
when inserted in a tasting with other wines from Napa Valley. It’s a notable achievement
to produce a wine with such complexity and Bordeaux-like character. These
are natural wines all dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with tiny portions of
Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, although the winery seems to be losing
patience with Merlot as they are replanting virtually all of their Merlot with old
Inglenook clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, which they feel perform better in the
Napa soils and micro-climates. One of the other changes instituted at Dominus
began in 2001 when they moved to the traditional basket press.” Wine Advocate
