Great Value # 13
Best Buys to Start the
Spring Off Right!
“After tasting the 2008s here, it was hard to avoid
concluding that William Fèvre is approaching
the level of the two pillars of the appellation,
Raveneau and Dauvissat… ” Steve Tanzer
Grand Cru
2008 Chablis Bougros (Domaine)_ _______________________________ 74.99
“Powerful on the attack, then ample but unevolved in the middle palate, offering
lovely sweetness and intensity without any sensation of weight. Terrific mounting
minerality gives the citrus and crushed stone flavors outstanding verve. This is still
an infant.” Steve Tanzer, rated 93+/100
Rated 92/100, Wine Spectator
“A class Chablis… ” Allen Meadows, rated 92-95/100
2008 Chablis Les Clos (Domaine)_ _____________________________ mag. 179.99
captivating sweetness. Leaves the mouth vibrating.” Steve Tanzer, rated 95+/100
Rated 94/100, Wine Spectator
“This is a great Les Clos… ” Allen Meadows, rated 94-97/100
2008 Chablis Les Preuses (Domaine)_ _____________________________ 79.99
Rated 93+/100, Steve Tanzer
2008 Chablis Valmur (Domaine)_________________________________ 84.99
2008 Chablis Valmur (Domaine)_______________________________ mag. 169.99
“A great Chablis Grand Cru in the making.” Steve Tanzer, rated 94-97/100
Rated 93/100, Wine Spectator
“When Valmur is really good, it rivals Les Clos for the best Grand Cru in Chablis
and this 2008 is really good. 2015+” Allen Meadows, rated 93-96/100
2008 Chablis Vaudesir (Domaine)________________________________ 64.99
“A wonderfully energetic wine that finishes with an almost painful whiplash of flavor
and outstanding length.” Steve Tanzer, rated 93-95/100
Rated 93/100, Wine Spectator
“Extremely discreet notes of wood set off the ripest nose among these Grand Crus in
2008 with orchard fruit and pure citrus aromas leading to impressively precise bigbodied
and powerful flavors brimming with dry extract and more minerality than
usual on the refined, intense and hugely long finish. A wine of class and grace but
with no lack of muscle.” Allen Meadows, rated 93-95/100
Premier Cru
2008 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre (Domaine)____________________ 69.99
“Grand Cru suavity and complexity here.” Steve Tanzer, rated 94/100
“… excellent depth as well as superb length. This delivers Grand Cru quality.” Allen
Meadows, rated 92-94/100
Rated 90/100, Wine Spectator
2008 Chablis Vaulorent (Domaine)_ ______________________________ 49.99
“Big and rich but with great energy to the citrus and powdered stone flavors. Offers
an almost painful combination of volume and pungent freshness. This round, tactile,
fine-grained wine really perks up the taste buds on the very long, vibrant finish.”
Steve Tanzer, rated 93+/100
Rated 92/100, Wine Spectator
“A terrific wine that could easily pass for a Grand Cru.” Allen Meadows, rated 92-
2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée _ _____________ 99.99
2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée _ ___________ mag. 199.99
“The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée, tasted from multiple
foudres, stylistically, looks to be a hypothetical blend of the 2003 and 1990.
The 2007 is full-bodied and powerful, with high tannins, high extract, and
tremendous color, stuffing, and richness…Dense, rich, more structured
than the 2003, sumptuous, and deep (in the style of the 1990), it should
evolve for 20-25 years.” Wine Advocate, rated 94-96/100
2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée_______________ 99.99
“The 2006 exhibits gamy, meaty, new saddle leather, kirsch liqueur, black
currant, pepper, lavender, and spice notes. The wine is full-bodied, rich,
deep, and long. One foudre, which may become a Cuvee Laurence, appears
to be of the same quality as the Cuvee Réservée, but the Laurence will be
bottled much later than the Réservée, which was about to be bottled at the
time of my visit in late August.” Wine Advocate, rated 92-94/100
This looks to be as good as the superb 2005 today.” Steve Tanzer, rated
94/100
2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée_______________ 99.99
2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée_______________ 89.99
“A candidate for ‘wine of the vintage’ is the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape
Cuvee Réservée. …Meaty, full-bodied, stunningly concentrated and pure,
and in need of 4-5 years of cellaring, it promises to be one of the longest -
lived wines of the vintage, lasting for a minimum of two decades.” Wine
Advocate rated 94+/100
2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence______________ 229.99
2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence____________ mag. 479.99
“The dark plum/garnet-tinged 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence
boasts sweet lavender, Provencal herb, cassis, and black cherry aromas. In
the mouth, it is full-bodied with superb fruit concentration as well as
Provencal typicity.” Wine Advocate, rated 93/100
“Really distinctive, with a gutsy, chewy frame supporting clove, blood
orange coffee, brick dust, macerated currant fruit, warm fig and hoisin
sauce notes.” Wine Spectator, rated 95/100
2006
Chateau Le Conseiller
Chateau Le Conseiller was purchased in 1996 by the young Jean-Philippe
Janoueix (Le Croix Saint-Georges, La Confession & Chabrun). With its
exceptional soils, and the vision of the young winemaker, this estate has
brought a new level of quality and creativity to the area.
“A top-notch effort from Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this blend of 90% Merlot
and 10% Cabernet Franc is a sleeper of the vintage. Its deep ruby/purple color
is accompanied by sweet blackberry and black currant fruit, licorice, earth,
and camphor notes, a fleshy, succulent mid-palate, and a ripe finish. A very
good wine from a humble appellation, qualitatively it transcends it pedigree.
Excellent value.” Wine Advocate
