Solaia
Just to the east of Tignanello lies the remarkable 25-acre
vineyard known as Solaia, the “sunny one”. Widely considered
one of the best Cabernet blends in the world, Solaia is
produced only in exceptional vintages. Smoothly blending
the aromas of black pepper, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and
plum, Solaia is strikingly elegant with nicely blended tannins
that support the sensation of sweetness and weight.
Hints of licorice and coffee return in the impressively long finish.
2007 Solaia
“The 2007 Solaia saturates the palate with a heady array of super-ripe black cherries,
plums, cassis, mocha and sweet French oak. There is an exotic quality to the
Solaia I find totally irresistible. Despite its considerable ripeness and opulence, the
2007 Solaia is never heavy, rather it impresses for its extraordinary finesse and
balance. Minerals, graphite and crushed rocks frame a long, seductive finish. This
Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in 100% new oak.
Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.” Wine Advocate, rated 97/100
Tignanello
Named after a choice vineyard on the property, Tignanello
was introduced in 1973, and set the standard for exceptional
Italian wine, pioneering a whole new category of luxury wines
known as “Super Tuscans”. Tignanello is the first Sangiovese
aged in small oak barrels: the first red wine in modern times to
use a non-traditional grape variety (Cabernet) in the blend; and
among the first red wines made in Chianti with no white grapes. Boasting an
intense ruby red color with light garnet hues. Tignanello offers complex and
harmonious aromas of tobacco, curry powder, blackberry and blackcurrant jam.
Silky on the palate, this wine has a light hint of sweet, nicely rounded tannins in
its persistent finish.
2007 Tignanello
“Highest Wine Advocate rated Tignanello Ever!
“This is as opulent a Tignanello as I have ever tasted but there is just enough acidity
and structure from the Sangiovese to keep things from going over the top. The wine’s
richness and warmth are such that in a blind tasting I mistook the 2007 Tignanello
for a wine from Maremma! The dense, muscular fruit follows through to an impeccable
finish with no hard edges and impossibly fine, silky tannins. Simply put, the
2007 is a magnificent Tignanello. The 2007 Tignanello is 80% Sangiovese aged in
300-liter French oak barrels (1/3 new), 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet
Franc, both aged in 100% new 225-liter French oak barriques. Anticipated maturity:
2012-2027.” Wine Advocate, rated 95/100
2008 Chateauneuf du Pape______________________________ 79.99
“Made from tiny yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare after a severe triage, Beaucastel’s
2008 Chateauneuf du Pape is a candidate for one of the top wines of the vintage.
While the normal production from their nearly 200 acres of vineyards can be as high
as 200,000 bottles, only 60,000 bottles were produced in 2008. It exhibits a deep
ruby/purple hue along with scents of creosote, licorice, smoked herbs, black currants,
and graphite. This rich, heady, beautifully made 2008 should evolve for 10-15 years.
It is somewhat of an outlier for the vintage.” Wine Advocate, rated 92-94/100
2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc_ _________________________ 89.99
“A blend of 80% Roussanne and the rest Grenache Blanc and other white varietals,
this beauty offers up notes of nectarines, orange marmalade, rose petals, and honeysuckle
as well as terrific richness, slightly more acidity than usual, and an exuberant,
honeyed, full-bodied style. Drink it over the next 5-7 years or longer.” Wine
Advocate, rated 93/100
2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes__________________ 149.99
“The 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes is more restrained than usual,
with more minerality and acidity, which is in keeping with the vintage character.
While still relatively exotic, everything is more buttoned down. However, the overall
impression is of a full-bodied, powerful, honeyed white wine with superb depth,
richness, and potential complexity. This beauty should be at its peak between 2010
and 2015.” Wine Advocate, rated 95/100
Fleur Saint-Antoine
Bordeaux Supérieur
70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc
consistent winner. This over-achieving estate has turned
A out a dark ruby-colored 2009 displaying abundant aromas
of sweet black currant fruit interwoven with notions of
tobacco leaf, licorice, and spice box. Medium-bodied with
silky tannins as well as an alluring lushness, it can be
enjoyed over the next 4-5 years. Great value.
