It was significant for me because... he’d taken<br />

that on board and he’d had that thought process<br />

<strong>to</strong> think, ‘Yeah, this is not me anymore’.<br />

Reasons for selection<br />

This s<strong>to</strong>ry was selected by four groups<br />

<strong>of</strong> participants.<br />

• We felt this s<strong>to</strong>ry was an enormous turning<br />

point. <strong>The</strong>re was a whole new world <strong>of</strong><br />

understanding reflected in <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

student. It was a dawning moment <strong>of</strong> selfdetermination<br />

and an awareness (perhaps<br />

developing) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

power and control <strong>of</strong>/for his life. <strong>The</strong>re was<br />

also growth for <strong>the</strong> teacher and affirmation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work/role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teaching pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ry highlighted accepting self in a<br />

loving relationship with o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

• This s<strong>to</strong>ry highlighted personal growth.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ry had a strong emotional effect<br />

because <strong>the</strong> child was able <strong>to</strong> understand<br />

that he could have a different value base <strong>to</strong><br />

that <strong>of</strong> his home. <strong>The</strong> teacher made a deep<br />

and lasting positive impact on <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong><br />

child saw himself and his place in <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
