<strong>The</strong> project<br />

<strong>The</strong> Australian Juvenile Detention Centres School<br />

Cluster drew <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r ten schools in juvenile<br />

detention centres across Australia, including<br />

both primary and secondary aged students, in<br />

an ambitious project with a unique student<br />

population. <strong>The</strong> overall objective was <strong>to</strong> increase<br />

student resilience and wellbeing by exposing<br />

students <strong>to</strong> explicit values education in a whole<br />

school learning environment. This included<br />

teachers, students and <strong>the</strong>ir primary caregivers<br />

– that is, <strong>the</strong> residential workers who supervised<br />

<strong>the</strong> students in <strong>the</strong>ir living units.<br />

This unique cluster adopted a multi-pronged<br />

approach <strong>to</strong> embedding values education. A<br />

number <strong>of</strong> teacher pr<strong>of</strong>essional development<br />

sessions were held with <strong>the</strong> University Advisor,<br />

Dr Thomas Nielsen, <strong>to</strong> scope <strong>the</strong> project, develop<br />

a shared understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> objectives and<br />

promote a common values language. <strong>The</strong> cluster<br />

considered how <strong>the</strong> ten principles from <strong>the</strong><br />

VEGPSP Stage 2 work could be incorporated in<strong>to</strong><br />

this project, which centred on activities that<br />

required students <strong>to</strong> give <strong>to</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs and through<br />

that <strong>to</strong> reflect on and interrogate <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong><br />

values for <strong>the</strong>mselves. <strong>The</strong> aim was for students<br />

<strong>to</strong> develop an understanding <strong>of</strong> values, translate<br />

<strong>the</strong>se in<strong>to</strong> actions within <strong>the</strong> school context and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n apply <strong>the</strong>m more broadly in <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own lives.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cluster organised three national teacher<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>rings for pr<strong>of</strong>essional development, two <strong>of</strong><br />

which were facilitated by <strong>the</strong> University Advisor.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se included interactive sessions around <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>mes <strong>of</strong>:<br />

• values in context<br />

• positive psychology – <strong>the</strong>ory, workshop<br />

and <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> this methodology<br />

• research <strong>to</strong>ols – qualitative and quantitative.<br />
