Northrop
Grumman's
Scalable Agile
Beam Radar
(SABR)
Successfully
Demonstrated
Northrop
Grumman,
headquartered in
Los Angeles,
California, in
conjunction with the U.S. Air Force, has successfully
completed a series of demonstration flight tests of its
Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) system, at Edwards Air
Force Base, California. The equipment was installed in an F-16
fighter, and the demonstration was in support of a U.S. Air
Force F-16 active electronically scanned array (AESA)
feasibility study.
SABR is a scalable AESA radar system designed to be
retrofitted in current F-16 aircraft and other legacy fighter,
attack, and training aircraft. Compared to mechanically
scanned array radars, SABR will provide added functionality,
increased performance, and greater reliability. SABR also will
provide improved situational awareness, enhanced detection
capabilities, high-resolution SAR maps, interleaved air-to-air
and air-to-surface mode operations, and an all-environment
precision strike capability.
NEWS BRIEFS
Lockheed Martin Contracts to Provide Sniper and LANTIRN Pods to Turkish Air Force
Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin has signed a foreign military sales contract to deliver Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods
(ATPs) and LANTIRN Enhanced Resolution (ER) navigation pods to the Turkish Air Force. Under the terms of the agreement, Lockheed
Martin will provide Sniper ATP and LANTIRN ER pods to equip Turkish Air Force F-16 Block 40 and Block 50 Peace Onyx aircraft. The
contract is valued at $118 million.
Packaged in a single, lightweight pod, the Sniper ATP provides long-range, positive identification of both moving and stationary
air and ground targets. It also possesses a video downlink, equipped with the widely used Rover ground receiver to relay highresolution
streaming video to forward-deployed forces for non-traditional intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, as well as
rapid target coordination.
The LANTIRN ER navigation pod, an upgraded version of the previous LANTIRN version, provides terrain-following radar, a thirdgeneration,
mid-wave forward-looking infrared radar (FLIR), enhanced image signal processing, and improved image quality. This
upgraded navigation pod allows aircrews to operate in daylight or darkness, and at mission altitudes from sea level to 40,000 feet.
Under the terms of the contract, which runs until 2019,
Rolls-Royce will provide the
RAF with a guaranteed level
