Remembered today largely through a specialized hobby scale model, there<br />
once was a successful Hungarian-manufactured fighter plane known as the<br />
MÁVAG Héja ("Hawk"). It was the result of an early foray into multinational<br />
aircraft development.<br />
In 1939, the Hungarians bought seventy Reggiane Re.2000 fighters from<br />
Italy. They replaced the original Italian-made engines with Hungarian-built<br />
Manfred Weiss WM K-14s, driving a Hamilton Standard three-bladed,<br />
constant-speed propeller. The WM K-14 engine was itself a foreign import,<br />
being produced under a license from the French manufacturer Gnome-<br />
Rhône, which had, in turn, based the design on the British Bristol Jupiter<br />
engine.<br />
Hungary obtained the further licenses needed to produce the modified<br />
planes internally and went into full production. Between 1940 and 1945, the<br />
country built approximately 200 of the MÁVAG Héja fighters. As it turned out,<br />
combat results for the MÁVAG Héja were poor. Hungarian<br />
pilots found themselves time and again<br />
outgunned and outmaneuvered by<br />
Allied P-38s and P-47s.<br />
