After the end of World War II,<br />
the Soviet Union tried and<br />
failed to develop a successful<br />
jet aircraft for tactical<br />
assignments. In England,<br />
however, Rolls-Royce already<br />
had a successful centrifugal<br />
compressor turbojet. To<br />
Joseph Stalin's astonishment, the company was willing to provide technical<br />
assistance and a manufacturing license to the Soviets.<br />
The reverse-engineered engine powered the MiG-15, a craft that<br />
proved extremely effective in the Korean War. Today, China is developing<br />
exports for its Hongdu L-15 Falcon, intended chiefly as a training aircraft<br />
for new military fliers.<br />
With a maximum speed of Mach 1.4 and a range of about 1,940 miles,<br />
the Falcon literally could leave the MiG-15 in the dust. In any event, the<br />
Falcon should provide an exciting experience for the novice flyer: Its limits<br />
range from +8 to -3 Gs.<br />
