The paths of technology can be winding indeed. At the dawn of the<br />
twentieth century, a Spanish artillery captain and a Swiss engineer founded<br />
the Hispano-Suiza automobile company.<br />
Decades of development produced<br />
outstanding internal combustion engines for<br />
cars and, eventually, for airplanes.<br />
Company ownership passed to the French, who<br />
produced the widely used Hispano-Suiza 12Y, a twelvecylinder,<br />
supercharged, liquid-cooled engine with a cruising output of 848<br />
horsepower. In the 1930s, the Klimov company began operations in Russia<br />
specifically to manufacture and further develop the Hispano-Suiza 12Y, for<br />
which the Soviets had obtained a license.<br />
And develop they did, eventually creating a range of advanced modern<br />
turbofan engines. Their RD-93, a variant of the RD-33 workhorse that powers<br />
various MiG aircraft, is the powerplant in China's FC-1, a modern,<br />
lightweight, multi-role combat fighter.<br />
