Increased Test-Retest Variability Typically
Precedes Definite Glaucomatous Field
Defects in Early Glaucoma
Presenter: Tutul Chakravarti
Early field loss is often represented by a region of variable
responses rather than by a localized deep scotoma. Increased
local fluctuations typically precede definite glaucomatous field
defects in early glaucoma in a set of subjects with 1) ocular
hypertension, 2) Primary Angle Closure and 3) glaucoma
suspects who converted to glaucoma with early localized
defects. The conversion to glaucoma is a reproducible
glaucomatous field defect at the moment of their conversion
in Automated Perimetry. This retrospective chart reviews 129
cases (256 charts; 243 OHT+9 PAC+4 glaucoma suspects).
Participants were tested once half-yearly and followed up 4-7
years. Early defects manifested as increased variable responses
in affected areas of 9 charts out of 31 converted charts
(25 converted patients). Variability occurs mostly at
pathological points in those 9 charts. Test-retest variability
increases in the areas finally becoming definitely abnormal
and representing warning signs of absolute defects.
