End-stage Glaucoma: Challenges of
Clinical Assessment, Surgical Versus
Medical Treatment, and Visual Prognosis
Presenters: Tarek Eid, Ahmad Mustafa, Gehad El-Nahry,
Moustafa Yaqup
Objectives: The course aims to instruct attendees about how to
deal with a patient with end-stage glaucoma in terms of clinical
assessment of diagnostic and progression parameters and
various modalities of treatment of such patient and the impact
of treatment and disease progression on visual prognosis.
Summary of Content: The course will discuss an important
topic that carries a major challenge in many regions of the world
where a plenty of patients are seen for the first time with a
severe form of glaucoma (end-stage). What are the criteria of
defining advanced to end-stage glaucoma, what further
investigations should be performed for these patients,
evaluation of progression rates and continued visual loss.
Evaluation and visibility of medical treatment with its recent
advances will be addressed and adherence to treatment plan
and follow-up schedule. Surgical treatment of these patients will
be discussed in details with various techniques to achieve a very
low target pressure, surgical hazards, wipe out phenomenon,
and long-term glaucoma stability versus continued progression
and visual loss in this highly advanced disease.
Target Audience: General Ophthalmologists and Glaucoma
Specialists
Educational Level: Intermediate and Advanced
