15. Illegal Substances . 15.1 Patient/clients found in possession of illegal controlled drugs. Each professional worker must be aware of the procedures appertaining to safety, risk assessment and risk management and adhere to these procedures at all times. 15.1.1 On Trust premises. If a patient/client is found in possession of illegal drugs or a substance thought to be illegal, then he or she should be advised that the possession of the item is unlawful. The Trust Head of Security should be contacted for advice on further action. The medical staff and police must be informed and the incident logged on Sentinel. If a member of staff suspects a visitor to be dealing in drugs they must inform the Trust Head of Security immediately. If a suspicious substance is discovered, not in the possession of an individual, the police must be informed. The supervisor or second member of staff must be notified and the incident logged on sentinel. The substance must be locked away and the senior manager in charge holds the key until the police arrive. 15.1.2 On Social Services Premises The community nurse must inform the manager of the establishment who will follow their own policy and procedures in dealing with the situation. 15.1.3 In the patient/client’s home PCT staff must use their professional judgement in dealing with each situation. Where concern exists that the patient/client is using or is in possession of illicit substances the situation must be discussed with the patient/client’s RMO and documented in the patient/client’s record. PCT staff must not receive illegal substances but encourage the client to dispose of them. However this would not be the case when the quantity of substance involved 40
may imply dealing, as breach of confidentiality would be justified because of the wider public implications. In such an event the PCT staff must seek guidance from the Trust Head of Security. 41
