22. Cytotoxic Medicines 22.1 Intravenous administration Patients requiring cytotoxic medicines to be administered by the intravenous route should be referred to the Georgina Unit, Russells Hall Hospital. 22.2 Subcutaneous administration of cytotoxic drugs This must only be undertaken after specific training. 22.3 Oral administration of cytotoxic drugs A minimal touch technique should be used and hands washed immediately before and after administration. Tablets must NOT be crushed. In cases of swallowing difficulty a suspension may be available from the supplying pharmacy. 22.4 Disposal of cytotoxic waste The nurse administering the treatment must ensure that appropriate waste receptacles and collection arrangements are followed as laid down in the Joint Trust Waste Management Policy. http://pctnet.dudley.nhs.uk/documents/cms/149-2007-1-9-5025008.pdf 48
