• boil the water for at least five minutes<br />

• use iodine (tw o drops per litre) or tablets; only use chlorine if absolutely nec ess ary<br />

b) Use w ater efficiently ; turning off the tap w hen you are not using w ater is the<br />

simplest and most effective w ay to save w ater, w hether w ashing your hands,<br />

brus hing y our teeth or s hav ing; turn on the w ater only w hen needed.<br />

Waste management<br />

Sports activities, es pecially large-scale ones, can generate c ons iderable w aste,<br />

some of w hich cause little more than dirt or minor disturbanc es, w hile others have a<br />

harmful and lasting effect on the environment and human health. Waste is<br />

unav oidable, but sound management ensures that w aste quantities are kept to a<br />

strict minimum.<br />

• minimize w aste to be dispos ed of and treated<br />

• minimize pollution due to w aste<br />

Recommendations for efficient w aste management<br />

• reduc e the amount of materials handled<br />

• avoid useless pac kaging through discussions w ith y our s uppliers<br />

• use as few dis pos able products as poss ible at your events<br />

• choos e c arefully the goods and materials handled, in partic ular:<br />

- avoid goods c ontaining toxic substanc es<br />

- choose reusable or recyc lable goods<br />

- choose goods w hose w aste c an be appropriately treated in the treatment
