Case Officer: A professional employee of an intelligence organization who is responsible <strong>for</strong><br />
providing direction <strong>for</strong> an agent operation.<br />
Clandestine Activity: An activity that is usually extensive, goal-oriented, planned, and executed<br />
to conceal the existence of the operation. Only participants and the agency sponsoring the<br />
activity are intended to know about the operation. “Storefront” operations, “stings,” and certain<br />
concentrated undercover investigations can be classified as clandestine activities.<br />
Classification: The determination that official in<strong>for</strong>mation requires, in the interest of national<br />
security, a specific degree of protection against unauthorized disclosure, coupled with a<br />
designation signifying that such a determination has been made; the designation is normally<br />
termed a security classification and includes Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret.<br />
Collation (of in<strong>for</strong>mation): A review of collected and evaluated in<strong>for</strong>mation to determine its<br />
substantive applicability to a case or problem at issue and placement of useful in<strong>for</strong>mation into<br />
a <strong>for</strong>m or system that permits easy and rapid access and retrieval.<br />
Collateral In<strong>for</strong>mation: National security in<strong>for</strong>mation classified TOP SECRET, SECRET or<br />
CONFIDENTIAL that is not sensitive compartmented in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />
Collection (of in<strong>for</strong>mation): The identification, location, and recording/storing of in<strong>for</strong>mation—<br />
typically from an original source and using both human and technological means—<strong>for</strong> input into<br />
the intelligence cycle <strong>for</strong> the purpose of meeting a defined tactical or strategic intelligence goal.<br />
Collection Plan: The preliminary step toward completing an assessment of intelligence<br />
requirements to determine what type of in<strong>for</strong>mation needs to be collected, alternatives <strong>for</strong> how<br />
to collect the in<strong>for</strong>mation, and a timeline <strong>for</strong> collecting the in<strong>for</strong>mation.
