It is here to be observed, that most <strong>of</strong> these diphthongs<br />
and triphthongs are improperly so called; being<br />
either single vowel sounds, as shown by the references<br />
to the table <strong>of</strong> vowels; or dissyllables, as shown<br />
by the hyphens in the English spelling. They appear,<br />
however, to be considered as such; because all <strong>of</strong> them<br />
ought to be pronounced as much in one syllable as<br />
possible.<br />
