Efficient maize producing zones were delineated based
on the unit cost of production (Figure 9). It was noted
that all selected maize growing districts in Uttar
Pradesh, Chindwara and Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh,
and Banswara in Rajasthan were inef ficient when
cultivating local varieties because of poor yield levels.
Maize production in Begusarai in Bihar and Bhilwara and
Udaipur in Rajasthan was borderline in terms of
efficiency. The remaining districts were efficient maize
producers. Introduction of hybrids changed the scenario.
Only Chindwara in Madhya Pradesh and Hardoi in Uttar
Pradesh were inefficient (Figure 10). Therefore, strong
seed sector and technology dissemination mechanisms
need to be developed to achieve widespread use of
improved technologies and hybrids.
