Health & Safety Considerations
It is essential that the activities you undertake as part of the Award are conducted in a safe working
environment. The following points should be considered whilst completing activities that form part of
The Cardiff Award.
The organisation that is organising your experience, or that you will be working for/volunteering at, has
the duty to look after your health and safety. You should:
• Attend all related pre-departure talks held by the organisation / your university or attend an
induction.
• Ensure that all relevant documentation and pre-departure information has been completed
• Raise awareness of any medical conditions or allergies that could cause a risk to your health
and safety.
• Visit your GP for advice regarding potential inoculations you may need for the country you are
travelling to.
• Know the name of your supervisor/ person responsible for your placement whilst you are
abroad.
• Understand the arrangements in place of an emergency.
• Understand the VISA conditions.
• Receive necessary health and safety training.
• Are told of and aware of any associated risks.
• Be provided with the necessary safety equipment or protective clothing.
• Know the procedure of reporting and recording accidents.
• Have the relevant child protection documentation if working with children or vulnerable adults.
• Have appropriate support systems in place if you encounter problems abroad.
• Have accommodation arranged.
• Receive a full itinerary of your stay away.
• Inform you of the level of insurance needed.
Please note that it is not the Cardiff Award’s responsibility to ensure this is in place; Award participants
need to take ownership of this area.
