<strong>Protestant</strong> Missions <strong>in</strong> Turkey and Armenia 123<br />

Acts 2 :<br />

43-47, <strong>in</strong> which he set forth <strong>the</strong> ideal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " one holy<br />

Catholic Church " <strong>in</strong> glow<strong>in</strong>g words. The difficulty subsided<br />

for a time. But by <strong>the</strong> year 1854 friction had aga<strong>in</strong> become<br />

so violent that <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> communicant members had to<br />

be dissolved. A new exam<strong>in</strong>ation took place, and aga<strong>in</strong> only<br />

eleven out <strong>of</strong> twenty candidates were admitted. For a time<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was aga<strong>in</strong> a calm. But eight years later <strong>the</strong>re arrived a<br />

<strong>Protestant</strong> Scripture reader, Garabed, a protege <strong>of</strong> Samuel<br />

Gobat, <strong>the</strong>n Bishop <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem, who had <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem become<br />

acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with <strong>the</strong> rules <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Anglican Church. He<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed that all adult <strong>Protestant</strong>s should be admitted to <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord's<br />

Supper, and <strong>the</strong>ir children baptized without exception.<br />

This naturally gave rise to new trouble and a fur<strong>the</strong>r crisis.<br />

As <strong>the</strong>re was no central authority for <strong>the</strong> Churches, <strong>the</strong><br />

missionaries travelled hi<strong>the</strong>r and thi<strong>the</strong>r try<strong>in</strong>g to establish<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> congregations, support<strong>in</strong>g, comfort<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

advis<strong>in</strong>g and admonish<strong>in</strong>g both <strong>the</strong> native pastors and catechists<br />

and <strong>the</strong> congregations <strong>the</strong>mselves. In some cases, as <strong>in</strong><br />

Kharput, special men were set apart for this evangeliz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

work with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Protestant</strong> community.<br />

In 1846 <strong>the</strong> Board began to pay special attention to educational<br />

work. After <strong>the</strong> <strong>Protestant</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Turkey had been<br />

formed <strong>in</strong>to separate communities side by side with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Churches, it was necessary, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case, to provide<br />

a separate educational system for <strong>the</strong> youth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> congregations.<br />

This was done by establish<strong>in</strong>g primary schools,<br />

which <strong>the</strong> church-members were expected to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> as soon<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y should be able to do so. Even more necessary was it<br />

to tra<strong>in</strong> able and reliable teachers and m<strong>in</strong>isters under <strong>Protestant</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence. We have already told how <strong>the</strong> Board began<br />

its educational work <strong>in</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople by establish<strong>in</strong>g advanced<br />

schools with a view to attract<strong>in</strong>g promis<strong>in</strong>g young<br />

Armenians. This undertak<strong>in</strong>g was now abandoned, for <strong>the</strong><br />

expense <strong>of</strong> such <strong>in</strong>stitutions was excessive, nor did <strong>the</strong>y seem<br />

altoge<strong>the</strong>r necessary as a pioneer<strong>in</strong>g agency, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>re was at<br />

that time a general <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel among <strong>the</strong> Armenians.<br />

The Board wished to devote attention to <strong>the</strong> congregations,
