for translat<strong>in</strong>g, pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and distribut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Holy Scriptures<br />

<strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> languages and dialects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oriental Churches,<br />

and for sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m so cheaply that <strong>the</strong>y may be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hands<br />

<strong>of</strong> all. In most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> languages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian populations<br />

Arabic, Armenian, Bulgarian <strong>Protestant</strong>s have laid <strong>the</strong><br />

foundation <strong>of</strong> a healthy, popular Christian literature, while<br />

<strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cases <strong>the</strong>y have been <strong>the</strong> first<br />

to <strong>in</strong>troduce a written<br />

language.<br />

Day schools have everywhere received careful attention,<br />

and higher schools have been founded. The Robert College<br />

<strong>near</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, <strong>the</strong> colleges <strong>in</strong> Marsovan, Kharput,<br />

A<strong>in</strong>tab, Marash, Tarsus and Assiut are lead<strong>in</strong>g higher education<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Near <strong>East</strong>. The Syrian <strong>Protestant</strong> College <strong>in</strong><br />

Beirut is<br />

<strong>the</strong> best and most advanced Christian school <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

whole <strong>of</strong> Turkey.<br />

The only competitors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se schools are not <strong>the</strong> native<br />

Christian schools, but those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman Missions. Nor<br />

may we underestimate <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> found<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> separate<br />

Christian Churches, <strong>in</strong> spite <strong>of</strong> all that is to be regretted <strong>in</strong><br />

connection with <strong>the</strong>m. The course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir history has <strong>in</strong><br />

general run thus after <strong>the</strong> :<br />

rupture was complete, <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />

Church shut itself<br />

up aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>Protestant</strong> aims <strong>in</strong> a spirit <strong>of</strong><br />

suspicion and hostility, plac<strong>in</strong>g every possible obstacle <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

way <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g its people. Those were critical times <strong>of</strong><br />

patient endurance, when <strong>the</strong> missionaries felt as if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had<br />

been put <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> corner. Their only hope lay <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> small<br />

<strong>Protestant</strong> congregations, which <strong>the</strong>y cherished with all <strong>the</strong><br />

greater solicitude s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>se were to be an object-lesson to<br />

<strong>the</strong> resist<strong>in</strong>g Churches. When, at times, <strong>the</strong> question was<br />

raised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>Protestant</strong> Churches, whe<strong>the</strong>r, out <strong>of</strong> national<br />

loyalty <strong>the</strong>y ought not to return to <strong>the</strong>ir native Church, <strong>the</strong><br />

answer was generally <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> negative.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> reason given<br />

was characteristic. They said While we ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a separate<br />

:<br />

position as <strong>Protestant</strong>s, our very existence and all our <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />

are an <strong>in</strong>centive to <strong>the</strong> old Churches to reform <strong>the</strong>mselves,<br />

and to clear away <strong>the</strong> rubbish <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir antiquated<br />

usages; but if we return to <strong>the</strong> old Church, we shall our-
