294 <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Protestant</strong> Missions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Near <strong>East</strong><br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st Islam and hea<strong>the</strong>nism. In <strong>the</strong>ir literature we f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

different views on most doctr<strong>in</strong>al questions, with <strong>the</strong> exception<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dogmas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dual nature and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spiration<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bible. Thus transubstantiation is both defended and<br />

attacked. There is,<br />

on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, a general practical<br />

tendency to lay stress on simple faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> crucified and<br />

risen Saviour. Even greater importance<br />

is attached to works<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law.<br />

Fasts hold <strong>the</strong> largest place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ecclesiastical<br />

life, though vows and pilgrimages are almost equally important.<br />

The priests are regarded as successors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Levitical<br />

priesthood. They are, however, not ord<strong>in</strong>arily called<br />

priests, but go by <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> kasha, that is, elder, presbyter.<br />

Unfortunately for <strong>the</strong> Syrian Church, Kussia, <strong>the</strong> <strong>near</strong>est<br />

Christian country, has proved, especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last half century,<br />

an attraction not only to honest labour<strong>in</strong>g men, but also<br />

to <strong>the</strong> priests, who make tours among <strong>the</strong> superstitious peasants<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Russia, and, under <strong>the</strong> pretense <strong>of</strong> collect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

money for some church, sa<strong>in</strong>t's shr<strong>in</strong>e, or miracle-work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

image, receive thousands <strong>of</strong> rubles, which <strong>the</strong>y afterwards<br />

squander <strong>in</strong> riotous liv<strong>in</strong>g. In Russia <strong>the</strong>y appear <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> guise<br />

<strong>of</strong> piety, but <strong>the</strong>y come home as godless mockers. The orda<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> such men as " priests " or " deacons," before <strong>the</strong>y<br />

set out upon <strong>the</strong>ir predatory excursions, is a chief source <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishops, <strong>the</strong> high fees charged for ord<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g will<strong>in</strong>gly paid, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> priest pays so well.<br />

The open<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> Western Persia has enabled <strong>the</strong>se it<strong>in</strong>erant<br />

beggars to extend <strong>the</strong>ir collect<strong>in</strong>g tours far and wide over <strong>the</strong><br />

Christian world.<br />

PROTESTANT MISSIONS IN PERSIA<br />

1. The work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Board} 1834-1870<br />

The American Board began<br />

its work <strong>in</strong> Persia among <strong>the</strong><br />

small, courageous Syrian people, and <strong>the</strong>re it cont<strong>in</strong>ued to<br />

Churches." Jewett, " Twenty-five Years <strong>in</strong> Persia. " Marsh, " A Tennessean<br />

<strong>in</strong> Persia." Biographies <strong>of</strong> Stoddard, Lobdell, Rhea, and <strong>of</strong> Fidelia Fiske<br />
