The Muhammadan World and <strong>the</strong> <strong>East</strong>ern Churches 73<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> freedom <strong>the</strong>y now enjoy, expos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

afresh to persecution.<br />

Yet <strong>the</strong> fundamental pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pioneers was a sound<br />

one. The great task <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian Church is <strong>the</strong> spiritual<br />

reconquest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se lost prov<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church, until at last <strong>the</strong><br />

cradle-lands <strong>of</strong> Christianity be aga<strong>in</strong> under <strong>the</strong> shadow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Cross.<br />

In this campaign <strong>of</strong> reconquest, <strong>the</strong> ancient Christian<br />

peoples and remnants <strong>of</strong> peoples naturally play a prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

part. Wherever <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>in</strong> a compact mass with a firm<br />

political and ecclesiastical organization, as <strong>in</strong> Roumania,<br />

Servia, Bulgaria and Greece, <strong>the</strong> political development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

last century has freed <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> Turkish yoke, and <strong>in</strong><br />

every one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se liberated countries, <strong>the</strong> return to Christianity<br />

has been astonish<strong>in</strong>g, Islam hav<strong>in</strong>g been completely<br />

thrust <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> background. Where <strong>the</strong> Christians are a<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ority, political and ecclesiastical progress<br />

is more difficult<br />

and slower. In such cases <strong>the</strong> Christians must be first raised<br />

from <strong>the</strong> degradation caused by <strong>the</strong> contempt and neglect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

oppressors. They must be elevated by <strong>the</strong> education <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

and spirit till<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are <strong>in</strong> a position to compete economically<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir more favoured neighbours. It seems impossible<br />

to imag<strong>in</strong>e a re-Christianization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>East</strong>, save through <strong>the</strong><br />

vitaliz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient Churches. No lesser aim should<br />

satisfy us. Have <strong>Protestant</strong> <strong>missions</strong> contributed much to a<br />

general <strong>in</strong>tellectual and spiritual restoration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se ancient<br />

Christian peoples ? Our fur<strong>the</strong>r enquiry will prove that we<br />

may confidently and joyfully answer, yes. Here we will<br />

simply mention a few po<strong>in</strong>ts that are important for <strong>the</strong> correct<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> subsequent chapters <strong>of</strong> this book, always<br />

remember<strong>in</strong>g that we have to apply to <strong>the</strong>se <strong>missions</strong> a<br />

standard different from that applied to <strong>missions</strong> among<br />

non-Christians, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong> this case <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> separate<br />

churches is not <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> object <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mission work, but<br />

only an <strong>in</strong>evitable consequence which has hardly ever<br />

caused <strong>the</strong> missionaries to loose sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir chief purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

reform.<br />

<strong>Protestant</strong> <strong>missions</strong> and Bible societies deserve great praise
