would o<strong>the</strong>rwise cast <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lot with <strong>the</strong> Evangelical Church.<br />

Inducements <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice and honour are used also to hold men <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence, and sometimes even to draw such back when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

have left <strong>the</strong> Church. We seem compelled to believe that <strong>the</strong><br />

adoption by <strong>the</strong> Koptic Church <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> our methods, such<br />

as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> preach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to church services at some<br />

places, has as its chief aim <strong>the</strong> hold<strong>in</strong>g ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> edify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people. In any case, <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se new features<br />

gives a semblance <strong>of</strong> life, caus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> people to feel less need<br />

<strong>of</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g towards <strong>the</strong> Evangelical Church, and mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m<br />

less approachable. Here and <strong>the</strong>re are found enlightened,<br />

earnest Christians who reta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir connection with <strong>the</strong> old<br />

Church. But <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>near</strong>ly always gotten <strong>the</strong>ir light from<br />

outside, and still<br />

go outside for <strong>the</strong>ir spiritual food. One <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se acknowledged to <strong>the</strong> writer that with<strong>in</strong> his Church as a<br />

whole 'spirituality does not exist.' One cannot but feel some<br />

sympathy with <strong>the</strong> desire <strong>of</strong> this ancient Church to hold toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong><br />

; spiritual life, it amounts to<br />

weigh<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> tradition and sentiment aga<strong>in</strong>st eternal truth and<br />

eternal life. If <strong>the</strong> day shall ever come that God shall brea<strong>the</strong><br />

upon <strong>the</strong>se dry bones and cause <strong>the</strong>m to live and rise up to<br />

serve Him by some better process than <strong>the</strong> naturally slow and<br />

own and <strong>in</strong>to ano<strong>the</strong>r organization, it will be welcomed by our<br />

mission. But that day is not yet here. The Evangelical<br />

Church stands as <strong>the</strong> only rally<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t for true faith and life<br />

and service " (Unit. Presby. Ann. Kep. 1907, 52).<br />

This, too, is a much discussed question,<br />

that is answered as<br />
