In Azraq, based on <strong>the</strong> estimated<br />
total area for each farm type and <strong>the</strong><br />
average consumption by dunum, <strong>the</strong><br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g results have been tree farms found:<br />

to limit <strong>the</strong> energy bill. Once <strong>the</strong>y<br />
are connected to electricity, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
pump<strong>in</strong>g costs will drastically<br />
be reduced and we fear a high<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir water abstraction.<br />

and trees are large water consumers,<br />
consum<strong>in</strong>g 68% of <strong>the</strong> total<br />
abstracted water while cover<strong>in</strong>g<br />
58% of <strong>the</strong> irrigated agricultural<br />
area. In <strong>com</strong>parison, large olive tree<br />
farms achieve more water sav<strong>in</strong>gs;<br />
us<strong>in</strong>g 12% of <strong>the</strong> abstracted water<br />
while cover<strong>in</strong>g 25% of <strong>the</strong> area. It<br />
can be expla<strong>in</strong>ed based on <strong>the</strong> fact<br />
that <strong>the</strong> irrigation water requirement<br />
of vegetables and fruit trees are<br />
higher than <strong>the</strong>y are for olive<br />
trees, and that farmers are often<br />
over irrigat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir vegetables to<br />
over<strong>com</strong>e <strong>the</strong> sal<strong>in</strong>isation of soils.
