Analysis of <strong>the</strong> agricultural situation <strong>in</strong> Azraq Bas<strong>in</strong><br />
German-Jordanian Programme “Management of Water Resources”<br />
5.4. Evolution trends for<br />
farms and irrigation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
current context<br />
Market factors, climatic factors<br />
and water availability have a<br />
direct impact on strategic plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for farms (when <strong>the</strong>re is one)<br />
and on farm<strong>in</strong>g practices, so<br />
some evolution trends for farms<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ability and irrigation can<br />
be expected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> near future.<br />
In Azraq, many farmers are<br />
convert<strong>in</strong>g to alfalfa at a worry<strong>in</strong>g<br />
pace, which could threaten<br />
even more <strong>the</strong> water resource<br />
<strong>in</strong> Azraq if no measure is taken<br />
rapidly. We rem<strong>in</strong>d here that<br />
alfalfa grow<strong>in</strong>g us<strong>in</strong>g irrigation<br />
systems such as spr<strong>in</strong>klers and<br />
central pivot which typically<br />
have high water consumption.<br />
Most farmers from <strong>the</strong> small<br />
olive tree farms have f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
difficulties as <strong>the</strong>re is very low or<br />
no profit at all, which is not enough<br />
to susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir families. Some are<br />
deeply <strong>in</strong>debted, <strong>the</strong>y would accept<br />
to sell <strong>the</strong>ir lands and wells if <strong>the</strong>y<br />
get an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g offer, but have<br />
no o<strong>the</strong>r alternative than cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />
farm<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> time be<strong>in</strong>g. On <strong>the</strong><br />
long term, <strong>the</strong>se families would<br />
not have any regular <strong>in</strong><strong>com</strong>e if <strong>the</strong>y<br />
leave <strong>the</strong> farm, as it is <strong>the</strong>ir only<br />
source of <strong>in</strong><strong>com</strong>e, and might depend<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future only on governmental<br />
support, or even migrate to <strong>the</strong><br />
cities (Amman, Irbid) to f<strong>in</strong>d a job.<br />
O<strong>the</strong>r farms like <strong>the</strong> professional<br />
olive tree farms are not quite<br />
profitable and are even sometimes<br />
<strong>in</strong> deficit, but are still plann<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ue farm<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y do not<br />
want to lose <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>the</strong>y<br />
made on <strong>the</strong> farm and th<strong>in</strong>k that<br />
<strong>the</strong> market could be more attractive<br />
a few years later. However, even<br />
if <strong>the</strong>y do not mention it clearly,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y might be <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> sell<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir land and well if <strong>the</strong>re is an<br />
opportunity, as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>com</strong>e from<br />
<strong>the</strong> farm is not essential for <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
In North Badia and Jiza, farmers<br />
are more reactive. There is a<br />
wide spread trend to switch from<br />
vegetables to stone fruits, s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
<strong>the</strong> market is risky for vegetables.<br />
Some <strong>in</strong>vestors who did not <strong>com</strong>e<br />
from farm<strong>in</strong>g backgrounds tried<br />
vegetable farm<strong>in</strong>g and abandoned<br />
it after just a year because <strong>the</strong>y<br />
were not successful. Ano<strong>the</strong>r trend<br />
that could appear next year is<br />
<strong>the</strong> start of greenhouses <strong>in</strong> North<br />
Badia and <strong>the</strong>ir expansion <strong>in</strong> Jiza.<br />
As entrepreneurs of stone fruit<br />
tree farms are successful, <strong>the</strong>se<br />
entrepreneurs tend to <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir orchards, some by adopt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
more water efficient techniques<br />
and more <strong>in</strong>tensive plantations.
