HMA Members T<strong>our</strong> F<strong>our</strong> Facilities<br />

Lexington, Ky.–<br />

Eighty members of the Hardwood<br />

Manufacturers Association gathered here recently<br />

for the 2008 Central Regional Meeting.<br />

Facility t<strong>our</strong>s, dinners, receptions and a guest<br />

speaker filled the agenda for the two-day affair.<br />

Larry Lowe, a timber harvesting compliance<br />

section superv<strong>is</strong>or with the Kentucky Div<strong>is</strong>ion of<br />

Forestry, spoke on how to “Expand Y<strong>our</strong> Markets<br />

to Sell More Hardwoods.” H<strong>is</strong> presentation<br />

included tips on how to take advantage of changing<br />

demands in the building industry, such as certification<br />

and green manufacturing, which can<br />

present new sales opportunities for American<br />

Hardwoods.<br />

On the first day of the regional meeting, attendees<br />

and guests traveled to Cox Interior Inc. in<br />

nearby Campbellsville where the firm <strong>is</strong> situated<br />

on 105 acres with 16 acres of manufacturing<br />

facilities under one roof. Cox uses Poplar, Oak<br />

and Cherry in the making of interior mouldings,<br />

doors, wood stair parts and fireplace mantels.<br />

In Columbia, Ky., the HMA t<strong>our</strong>ed Kentucky<br />

Tie & Lumber Co., which boasts an annual<br />

Hardwood production of 8 million board feet primarily<br />

in Poplar, Hickory, Hard and Soft Maple,<br />

and Red and White Oak.<br />

Later that day in London, Ky., the group t<strong>our</strong>ed<br />

Begley Lumber Co. Inc., headquartered here.<br />

Between Begley’s band mill operations in both<br />

London and Hyden, Ky., the company produces<br />

60 million board feet of Hardwood <strong>lumber</strong> per<br />

year. <strong>The</strong> firm’s markets include 30 percent cabinet,<br />

30 percent flooring, 15 percent wholesaler/d<strong>is</strong>tributor,<br />

5 percent export and 20 percent<br />

pallet/railroad tie.<br />

Before leaving the regional meeting, the HMA<br />

attendees t<strong>our</strong>ed the facility of Harold White<br />

Lumber, located in Morehead, Ky. <strong>The</strong> firm produces<br />

10 million board feet of Hardwoods each<br />

year, primarily Red and White Oak, Poplar, Ash,<br />

Maple, Cherry and Walnut. Flooring and cabinetry<br />

compr<strong>is</strong>e more <strong>than</strong> half the company’s<br />

markets.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Hardwood Manufacturers Association <strong>is</strong><br />

the <strong>only</strong> national trade organization with membership<br />

limited to Hardwood sawmills and concentration<br />

yards located in the United States.<br />
