Departmental Policies<br />

1. All English core requirements must be taken at Miriam College.<br />

Recognition of transfer credits is at the discretion of the English<br />

Department Chair who decides whether a particular course meets<br />

the requirements of content and achievement standards.<br />

2. English courses must be taken as scheduled in the core patterns and in<br />

proper sequence: E-100/E-100 (for the Deaf), E-101/E-101 (for the Deaf),<br />

E-102, E-103/E-104/E-104 (for the Deaf), E-105, E-106, E-107, and E-110.<br />

3. E-101 is the first English course taken by an incoming first year student.<br />

A student who obtained a score below percentile 71 in the English portion<br />

of the Admissions Test for College and Universities (ACTU) or Qualifying<br />

Examination for Collegiate Studies (ATCU), however, needs to take<br />

E-100 first.<br />

4. E-100 is a 3-unit, non–credit course and its term mark is P (Passing) or F<br />

(Failure). A student is eligible for E-101 after she gets a P in E-100.<br />

5. Deaf students in mainstream classes may opt to take another English<br />

subject in place of E-102.<br />

6. E-103 is taken by students majoring in Child Development Education,<br />

International Studies, Social Work, and Psychology.<br />

7. E-104 is taken by students majoring in Applied Arts, Business<br />

Administration, Communication, Computer Technology,<br />

Entrepreneurship, and Leisure and Tourism Management.<br />

8. Environmental Planning and Management students take both E-103<br />

and E-104.<br />

9. E-107 is taken by Accountancy students.<br />

Course<br />

Descriptions<br />

E-100 Intensive English (3 units, non-credit)<br />

The course is a non-credit subject designed to improve the students’ English<br />

language ability to prepare them to get into the mainstream of college<br />

English and later, meet the demands of using English for academic purposes.<br />

It addresses skills geared towards efficient listening for purposeful activities,<br />

active reading for critical thought, and speaking and writing with accuracy<br />

and coherence.<br />

E-100 Intensive English for the Deaf (3 units)<br />

The course is designed to allow deaf students to develop their reading<br />

fluency, expand their vocabulary, improve their grammar, and develop<br />

study skills to become independent and active learners and do effective<br />

work in their courses.<br />

E-101 Communication Skills 1 (3 units)<br />

The course is a study and practice of the principles of effective expository<br />

writing. The course emphasizes the process approach to writing and<br />

underscores the reading-writing connection. It focuses on developing<br />

the students’ writing as well as research skills through the introduction<br />

of the different types of expository writing and other forms of discourse.<br />

E-101 Communication Skills for the Deaf (3 units)<br />

The course is designed to reinforce the reading skills of deaf students towards<br />

writing. The students will focus on understanding the different methods<br />

of exposition, breaking down the parts of a paragraph and essay,<br />

and creating coherent and cohesive compositions that manifest sentence<br />

sense and critical thinking.<br />

10. E-110 is taken by Biology students.<br />

11. Only deaf students are allowed to enroll in subjects designed for them:<br />

E-100, E-101, and E-104 for the Deaf. A deaf student, however, may enroll<br />

in mainstream classes upon recommendation of his/her teacher and<br />

at the discretion of the English Department Chair.<br />

12. The English Department also offers E-108 and E-109, which are electives<br />

open to all majors.<br />

13. A student should obtain at the end of the term at least the following grades:<br />

a. 2.0 for the Communication Skills subjects: E-101, E-102, E-103, E-104,<br />

E-107, and E-110. Below 2.0 is automatically an F.<br />

b. 1.0 for the Literature subjects: E-105, E-106, E-108, and E-109.<br />

E-102 Speech Communication (3 units)<br />

The course aims to develop the students’ oral communication skills for<br />

effective intrapersonal and interpersonal communication in the academe<br />

and the workplace. It seeks to advance students’ concepts of the oral<br />

communication process as well as techniques on oral performance of<br />

Literature. As a continuation of E-101, it also covers rhetorical organization.<br />

E-103 Fundamentals of Research (3 units)<br />

The course is designed to introduce the students to the methods and<br />

mechanics of research and research writing. As a continuation of E-101 and<br />

E-102, it reinforces the necessary discipline and proper attitude writing and<br />

presenting a research paper entails.<br />

14. In E-100, a Communication Skills subject, the passing grade is also 2.0.<br />

The term mark as indicated in No. 4, however, is a letter grade.<br />

15. In subjects for the deaf, the passing grade is 1.0 and the term mark<br />

is numerical.<br />

16. No student may be given credit for E-103 unless she has satisfactory<br />

completed all the requirements of this course, which includes the entire<br />

research of her chosen topic. Since the “research process” includes meeting<br />

specific deadlines, this paper must be completed and submitted within<br />

the regular time span of the semester in which the course is taken.<br />

E-104 Business English (3 units)<br />

The course aims to train students to adopt formal, appropriate manners in<br />

preparation for practicum; to be familiar with ethics in the workplace; and to<br />

develop writing and verbal communication skills with business-like precision.<br />

The course is designed to help students cope effectively with the English –<br />

related demands of the business environment namely writing business letters,<br />

memos and reports, conducting interviews, and preparing sales presentation,<br />

project proposals, and case analysis<br />

E-104 Business English for the Deaf (3 units)<br />

The course is designed to enable deaf students to develop their business and<br />

social English skills, with focus on improving their reading comprehension,<br />

building their business English vocabulary and grammar, and enhancing<br />

their personal attributes. It prepares them to cope with the demands of the<br />

business environment, such as writing e-mails and business letters, making<br />

effective presentations, and applying for a job.<br />
