Language<br />
Requirement<br />
Upon acceptance to Miriam College, students who scored 66 and below in<br />
English in the entrance examination are required to take English Plus with<br />
the Language Learning Center and for those who scored 67–70 in English are<br />
required to take Intensive English (E-100).<br />
Furthermore, non-native speakers of Filipino are required to take<br />
Conversational Filipino (FIL-100 A) and basic Reading and Writing in Filipino<br />
(FIL-100 B) with the Language Learning Center.<br />
A descriptive term mark of P (Passing) or F (Failed) is given to students<br />
at the end of their pre-academic English and Filipino subjects.<br />
A certificate of completion is issued to students upon passing the<br />
pre‐academic English and Filipino subjects. This certification will be<br />
presented to the Registrar when the student enrolls for her regular<br />
English and/or Filipino subjects in the first year curriculum.<br />
Financial Aid<br />
The college provides three types of financial aid to students who show need<br />
for assistance in defraying their education expenses.<br />
1. Grants-in-Aid<br />
Tuition and/or general fees grants are given on a yearly basis to students who<br />
meet the following criteria:<br />
a. Demonstrate financial need<br />
b. Admission score/CQPA of at least 3.50<br />
c. Very good evaluation and/or substantial contribution<br />
to the Miriam community<br />
d. Exemplar Behavior<br />
e. The student is expected to complete the specified service hours<br />
in the assigned office in the college, if applicable.<br />
Scholarship and<br />
Financial Aid<br />
Miriam College offers a number of scholarship grants to deserving students.<br />
Honor Scholarships<br />
This type of scholarship is awarded on a yearly basis to:<br />
1. First year students who graduated valedictorians<br />
(graduating class with at least 100 students)<br />
2. Upper-class students who are among the top three of their class<br />
and whose CQPA is at least 4.30<br />
3. Top three (3) examinees in the Miriam College Admissions Test (MirCAT)<br />
The honor scholar enjoys a 100% discount on tuition fee.<br />
Athletic/Varsity Scholarships<br />
The college also offers a number of athletic or varsity scholarships. Placers in<br />
athletic auditions for varsity players are granted exemption from the payment<br />
of two (2) units of Physical Education classes for first year and sophomore<br />
students, and two-unit discount for students in the higher years with no PE<br />
classes. Privileges include food allowance during games, varsity uniforms,<br />
transportation to and from the venues of inter-scholastic meets, and insurance<br />
coverage of worth Php 305,000.00 per athlete. The Associate Dean for Student<br />
Affairs and PE Chairperson will coordinate on this matter.<br />
2. Self-Help<br />
This help offers a limited number of remunerative work opportunities on a<br />
semestral basis to the responsible students to assist them in defraying part<br />
of their college expenses in an emergency situation. The following are the<br />
criteria for acceptance:<br />
a. Demonstrate financial need<br />
b. Admission score/CQPA of at least 3.50<br />
c. Very goof evaluation and/or substantial contribution<br />
to the Miriam community<br />
d. Exemplar Behavior<br />
e. The student is expected to complete the specified service hours<br />
in the assigned office in the college, if applicable.<br />
3. Sister Miriam Thomas Scholarship<br />
This program is designed to broaden the clientele base of the institution<br />
through the extension of scholarships to deserving students who need<br />
assistance in defraying educational expenses. Except for an admission score<br />
of 4.0, the same criteria as the Grant-in-Aid and Self-Help students apply.<br />
4. Banks, Companies, Foundation, and Individuals<br />
They offer scholarships on a yearly basis to deserving students who meet<br />
the same criteria as the Grant-in-Aid and Self-Help.<br />
Note: Grantees of financial aid are expected to render certain hours of<br />
service each semester to the college. The service is structured so as to<br />
extend assistance to the college staff particularly during the critical<br />
periods of registration, examinations, graduations, and others. It is<br />
directly under the supervision of the Office of Associate Dean for<br />
Student Affairs.<br />
Release of Financial Aid application forms is every second to third week of<br />
March and is available at the HEU Admissions Office.<br />
