Department <strong>of</strong> Labor and Industries<br />

New Recruitment Process Invites Diversity<br />

The candidate pools <strong>for</strong> <strong>Washington</strong> Management Service (WMS) positions at Labor<br />

and Industries did not reflect <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Washington</strong>’s civilian work<strong>for</strong>ce. Labor<br />

and Industries worked with <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Personnel to improve <strong>the</strong> recruitment<br />

process. The goal: provide a diverse pool <strong>of</strong> 10 qualified candidates <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Human<br />

Resources Manager position within 90 days.<br />

The team identified strategies to publicize <strong>the</strong> job in 10 new markets, which led to<br />

1,000 e-mail postings <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> job announcement. The team also created methods <strong>for</strong><br />

screening, testing and processing applications.<br />

<strong>Results</strong><br />

! Created and sent to applicants an electronic presentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> Thurston<br />

County, in<strong>for</strong>mation about Labor and Industries and a description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> position.<br />

! Documented a replicable system <strong>for</strong> recruiting and screening applications that<br />

can be used in future recruitments.<br />

! Received 72 applications <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> position. Twenty-three received a second<br />

screening.<br />

! Submitted 12 qualified diverse candidates to <strong>the</strong> hiring manager <strong>for</strong> final<br />

selection.<br />
