Welcome to the <strong>Capital</strong> <strong>Region</strong> <strong>BOCES</strong> Adult & Continuing Education catalog,<br />

featuring courses offered during the 2010-2011 school year. <strong>BOCES</strong> is proud to<br />

share the expertise and talent of our faculty and staff through programs where<br />

you can learn more, earn more and train for great careers right here in the<br />

Tech Valley/<strong>Capital</strong> <strong>Region</strong>. Classes are open to all persons age 18 and older,<br />

unless otherwise noted, and are held primarily at our <strong>Capital</strong> <strong>Region</strong> Career &<br />

Technical School (Career & Tech) campuses in Albany (Colonie) and Schoharie,<br />

and our Health Careers Center, Rosewood Plaza, across from Albany campus.<br />

Registration and materials fees vary as indicated in the catalog and are paid by<br />

check, certified check or money order at the time of registration, unless noted.<br />

You will be notified only if a course is full or cancelled.<br />

Cancellations<br />

Classes are held per the schedule listed in each description. If a course is<br />

cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, students will be notified within five<br />

days of the start date. Notification of class cancellations due to inclement<br />

weather will be provided on our <strong>BOCES</strong> website, www.capitalregionboces.org/<br />

CareerTech, and via local television news stations.<br />

Diploma) Program<br />

<strong>BOCES</strong> Adult Education Faculty,<br />

The GED program is offered<br />

for students age 18 or older<br />

who lack a high school diploma<br />

and have left school. It is free<br />

and features instruction by a<br />

certified teacher in five areas of<br />

study to prepare for the GED<br />

exam. Initial assessment is done<br />

and an individualized education<br />

Interested in learning how<br />

to create your own mosaics?<br />

Wondering what to do with old<br />

chipped or broken dishes, glass,<br />

pottery or tile? Create your own<br />

mosaic “fractured” frame or<br />

mirror to make a one-of-a-kind,<br />

unique piece. During this fourevening<br />

class, you will learn a<br />

variety of mosaic techniques,<br />

including material selection,<br />

design, cutting, mortaring and<br />

grouting; plus, you’ll take home<br />

your own completed piece. This<br />

process can be transferred to any<br />

surface. Bring your own bits and<br />

pieces and redesign. Wear clothes<br />

appropriate for class or an apron.<br />

Traditional Victorian jewel<br />

A Culinary Tour of the French Quarter<br />

Experience this most historic<br />

region of New Orleans through<br />

a culinary tour of its restaurants<br />

and cuisine. From appetizers to<br />

dessert, students will create the<br />

classics of the French Quarter.<br />

New Orleans is more about the<br />

blending of cultures than just<br />

spicy food. You’ll learn how to<br />

layer flavors and dispel the myth<br />

that all food from the region is<br />

hot. Students also will learn the<br />

history of and the differences<br />

between Creole and Cajun food.<br />

Explore the ways in which<br />

social, historical events, religious<br />

movements, people and the<br />

changing demands of food<br />

consumption have influenced<br />

a variety of cultures. Topics<br />

will include the cross cultures,<br />

character, fusion and classical<br />

dishes of different cuisines.<br />

Students also will be able to<br />

pick certain cuisines and cultures<br />

to focus upon. We will design<br />

menus, cook and taste different<br />

dishes from around the world. A<br />

journal will be kept, and we will<br />

talk and write about the tastes<br />

and flavors of our prepared foods.<br />

Auto Body Repair<br />

Learn the skills and knowledge<br />

needed to repair and refinish<br />

damaged metal vehicle panels.<br />

The first two nights will cover<br />

safety and demonstrations of<br />

repair and refinishing methods.<br />

During the next three weeks,<br />

students will be provided with<br />

a panel or vehicle on which to<br />

practice fundamental skills. During<br />

the second four weeks, they can<br />

bring in their own vehicles. If a<br />

student doesn’t have a vehicle in<br />

need of repair, practice projects<br />

will be available, or he/she may<br />

help another student. All paint<br />

spraying will be done inside a<br />

down-draft booth. Materials used<br />

for the learning projects during the<br />

first four weeks will be provided.<br />

Students pay for materials they<br />

use on their personal vehicles<br />

and must purchase an organic<br />

paint respirator. A fresh-air type<br />

respirator will be provided for the<br />

application of catalyzed paint<br />

products. A positive pressure fresh<br />

air hood must be worn at all times<br />

when spraying paints with catalyst<br />

hardeners.<br />

homes, apartments, schools,<br />

This Adult Basic Home Repair<br />

Skills course covers the basic,<br />

introductory skills in electricity,<br />

plumbing, and carpentry. Upon<br />

completing the program, students<br />

will have enhanced workplace<br />

skills and new skills that are<br />

useful at home. The instructor<br />

How Money Works<br />

This course will cover the root<br />

causes of financial problems:<br />

failure to plan and being<br />

uninformed or misinformed.<br />

It will also explain the basics<br />

behind “the rule of 72;” what<br />

are mutual funds and money<br />

market investments; the 3Ds of<br />

successful investing; wholesale<br />

banks versus retail banks; how<br />

and why to pay off debt; and<br />

how to recognize credit card<br />

traps. Also: details of how<br />

mortgages work and who<br />

profits on your investment in<br />

a house; how to reduce your<br />

monthly mortgage payments;<br />

how to get completely out of<br />

debt sooner; how to invest<br />

the difference in your monthly<br />

savings and set up college fund<br />

and retirement accounts. Further:<br />

a full explanation of what<br />

insurance is and how it relates<br />

to the participant and his/her<br />

relatives, and what life insurance<br />

is and how to properly purchase<br />

a policy that is appropriate for<br />

you, not the agent. Every student<br />

will complete and receive a free<br />

professional financial needs<br />

analysis (FNA), complete with a<br />

restructuring program on how<br />

to alter his/her own present debt<br />

course and an exact date when<br />

he/she can get completely out of<br />

debt sooner and at much lower<br />

cost. The instructor will complete<br />

the FNA and present it to each<br />

student. An FNA normally costs<br />

approximately $1,500 to perform,<br />

but is offered at no expense to<br />

students in this course.<br />

to know food safety and the<br />

critical importance of its role<br />

as well as how to share food<br />

employees. ServSafe gives them<br />

the knowledge and tools to do<br />

that. Areas that will be covered<br />

will include: foods, cleaning,<br />

sanitizing and maintenance,<br />

facilities, monitoring food<br />

personnel, temperature measuring<br />

devices, allergens, high-risk<br />

populations, legal/regulatory<br />

issues, facility layout and design,<br />

course will provide an overview of<br />

OSHA safety standards and health<br />

industry. Students review safety<br />

and health principles and<br />

Welder Certification Program<br />

The Welder Certification Program<br />

is designed to teach students<br />

the welding skills that local<br />

employers are seeking. This<br />

450-hour program will prepare<br />

students for an occupation as<br />

a certified welder. The program<br />

combines technical shop courses<br />

along with supporting classroom<br />

lessons in weld theory. Topics<br />

include orbital welding, which<br />

is used in high-tech industries<br />

such as semiconductor and<br />

pharmaceutical manufacturing.<br />

A high school diploma or<br />

enrollment in a GED program is<br />

required. Certification testing,<br />

books, welding helmets, jackets,<br />

gloves and safety glasses are<br />

included in the tuition. Through<br />

continuous, open enrollment,<br />

students may begin the program<br />

at any time during the year.<br />
