4.2 Assessing Your Clients’ Needs<br />

Prior to developing a career development program, course, workshop or resource, it is<br />

imperative to assess the career development needs <strong>of</strong> your clients. Once you have<br />

identified the needs <strong>of</strong> your clients, you can determine the appropriate developmental<br />

phase and verify the key career management competencies and per<strong>for</strong>mance indicators<br />

that need to be addressed by your career development intervention/s.<br />

<strong>Blueprint</strong> career competencies that are frequently ranked highly by adults include:<br />

<strong>Career</strong> Competency 1: Build and maintain a positive self-concept<br />

<strong>Career</strong> Competency 4: Participate in lifelong learning supportive <strong>of</strong> career goals<br />

<strong>Career</strong> Competency 5: Locate and effectively use career in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

<strong>Career</strong> Competency 7: Secure/create and maintain work<br />

<strong>Career</strong> Competency 11: Understand, engage in and manage the career building process<br />

Step One<br />

In Chapter 4 <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Blueprint</strong>, pp 60–62, read Step Two:<br />

Assess Your Learners’ Needs.<br />

Step Two<br />

Clarify your target group.<br />

Step Three<br />

Clarify who will be involved in assessing your learners’<br />

career development needs.<br />

Step Four<br />

Provide explanations <strong>of</strong> the career management<br />

competencies to all participants contributing to the career<br />

development needs assessment.<br />

Step Five<br />

Conduct a career development needs assessment. <strong>Re</strong>fer<br />

to Appendix A <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Blueprint</strong> entitled <strong>Career</strong><br />

Development Needs Assessment Survey (collect data by<br />

means <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>mal survey, group brainstorming, one-on-one<br />

interviewing etc). Consider your target group and modify<br />

the survey questions, design or delivery as appropriate to<br />

the needs and abilities <strong>of</strong> your groups.<br />
