4.5 Selecting Learning Activities<br />

To ensure that the career development process is a successful one, not only do activities<br />

need to be integrated into a structured program, learners need sufficient time to engage<br />

with the material and make it personally relevant and meaningful. When clients are<br />

encouraged to see and to reflect on the relationships between learning activities, their<br />

capacity to establish and work towards achieving their unique life, learning and work goals<br />

will be enhanced.<br />

Step One<br />

Go to Appendix B, which contains the Activity Selection,<br />

Design and Measurement Form, and make a copy.<br />

(Complete a copy <strong>of</strong> this <strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> every local standard<br />

related to each career management competency.)<br />

Step Two<br />

Use the results <strong>of</strong> your needs assessment (refer to<br />

Section 4.2 – Assessing Your Clients’ Needs) to verify your<br />

selection <strong>of</strong> the career competencies and per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

indicators that are most appropriate <strong>for</strong> your client/s. As you<br />

begin to define the scope <strong>of</strong> the career development<br />

program, keep in mind your organisation’s capabilities and<br />

resources. <strong>Re</strong>member that successful programs <strong>of</strong>ten begin<br />

in a small way and build on experience.<br />

Step Three<br />

Develop an appropriate local standard to demonstrate<br />

competence <strong>of</strong> each selected per<strong>for</strong>mance indicator. Each<br />

learner-focused activity should relate to a <strong>Blueprint</strong> career<br />

management competency and per<strong>for</strong>mance indicator, and<br />

include a local standard that states how and at what level<br />

the learner is expected to demonstrate their skills against a<br />

specific per<strong>for</strong>mance indicator (refer to Section 4.4 –<br />

Developing Local Standards).<br />
