ROKURO Interviews
Kate Wild
How Long have you been singing, and are there any particular
artists you draw influences from?
I have been singing for as long as I can remember. There’s a video of me
somewhere, singing with a hairbrush to my family at Christmas when I was
about 3 years old. Most of the mornings I spent getting ready for school I
could be found singing along to Christina Aguilera’s ‘Stripped’ album on
repeat. She was such a big vocal influence on me growing up. I really admire
the range, power and tone to her voice. During my teens I loved pop punk
singers like P!NK, Evanescence, Avril Lavigne and Hayley Williams (Paramore).
It wasn’t until about 2 years ago that I really started to get into EDM music. In
2012 I was fortunate enough to spend some studio time with Denver based
artist, Stélouse, (formally ForeverKID). I got to see the ins and outs of
creating electronic dance music. Ever since, I’ve drawn influence from artists
such as Ellie Goulding, Calvin Harris, Rudimental, Avicii, Disclosure,
AlunaGeorge, Wilkinson, Ella Eyre, and Zedd.
How did your Latest vocal sample pack for Loopmasters come
about?
A few years ago, a friend of mine tagged me in a Facebook status, somebody
was looking for singers for a vocal pack. I got in contact with them, but I had
very little experience recording in the EDM style or with top line writing at all,
at the time. In the end, nothing came of it. But earlier in 2014, I realised how
much I enjoyed writing and recording. I had gained so much more experience
over that time between then and now, and wanted to give writing a vocal
pack a go. So I went straight to google and researched the top vocal pack
companies. Loopmasters came up and I knew many friends who used them,
so I sent them an email and it all went from there really. They are an absolute
pleasure to work with.
8
www.AudiationMagazine.com

I have noticed that you are doing very well with your vocal session
work, And have worked with some massive names already
including, Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue and Beverly Knight, To
name but a few… What advice would you give to anyone one wanting
to start out in the singing or music industry?
Put yourself forward for everything, even if it’s not your usual style. If you
don’t try, you’ll never know your potential. There’s a lot you can learn from
meeting new people and trying new things. It moulds you into a better
professional musician and can get you recommended for a lot more work. It’s
a tough industry, so you’ve got to prove to people why you’re worth their
attention.
Another piece of advice is to network, network, network. A lot of this
industry is about who you know. Go to live shows, email producers, whatever
is most relevant to you. It’s important to make the effort to get to know the
people you want to take an interest in you. It’s a two way relationship.
Lastly, always keep in mind the people who inspire you. And think about what
they would do if they were in your shoes. Talent can only get you so far, stay
humble and work at your skill set. After-all, good manners and a smile don’t
cost a thing.
9

10 www.AudiationMagazine.com

Is there any new artists or singers that you have been collaborating
with recently that we should look out for in the future?
Yes! I have recently been working with my good friends Matt and Paul from
Mon Frere, they’ve actually written all the music themselves and asked me the
be the voice on several tracks from the album they’ve been working on. To be
released early 2015. One of the songs I featured on ‘Hero’ was one of the
winners of the international songwriting competition 2014 in our genre. One of
the judges was Avicii which was awesome. www.monfrere.co.uk
I’ve also recently been working with good friend Kyler Niko
www.facebook.com/kylerthisisme and Greek artist Stelios www.steliosmusic.
tumblr.com and many more I look forward to sharing more about in 2015!
Do you have a favourite style of music that you love personally, As I
noticed your Loopmasters, vocal hooks and A’cappellas pack is in the
Deep House, Drum and bass and EDM styles,
Until I got into EDM a few years back, I used to be and still am a big rock music
fan. Toto are my favourite band. I got to see them live in London once, and I was
totally blown away by the musicianship. Sometimes when I’m writing vocal
lines, I feel the influence of their music in my writing. Growing up my family
listened to lots of different types of rock, from classic to pop punk. I love a bit of
attitude in my music.
What do you think of Reality singing contests like X factor, pop idol
and the Voice, did you ever consider entering any of those kind of
shows when you were starting out?
I think reality TV shows are a platform to get your name out there. But I don’t
necessarily think it’s a good platform. Involving yourself in those kind of shows
can take away your freedom and creativity. I know lots of people who have
worked for the X-factor, from makeup artists to producers, musicians, singers
and dancers. It’s been reported to me that it’s all very staged; the reactions,
the song choices, the miming, the image. It’s not representative of the thrill of
the hunt you get from working your socks off to be a successful musician in
this industry. Most of all, I’d hate to think I couldn’t have a say in anything I did.
However I did once, get scouted for the first ever UK version of ‘The Voice’. I
went to the audition for the experience and to network. I met lots of incredible
singers and the atmosphere was amazing. I was glad of the offer but talent
shows aren’t for me.
11

Do you have your own studio set up and do any music production
and record your own vocals, if so which could you tell us a little bit
about that and which your fav DAW of choice for recording?
In 2008 I studied music technology, and for my studies, I pretty much bought
the exact set-up they had, and set it all up in my bedroom. This included an
iMac, Logic pro 8, M-Audio Fast Track Pro, (2 channel interface), M-Audio
Axiom 49 key midi keyboard, AKG C414 BXLS (my baby).
I got this microphone for my 18th birthday and it has been a huge part of my
life ever since. As a session singer, it’s important to have quality equipment if
you want a decent sound.
Now I’m using an Apollo twin interface with Logic X. I’ve always used Logic, so
its my personal preference. A lot of producers I know use both Pro Tools and
Logic. But for me, I get a lot of use out of the sounds and loops that come with
Logic - I don’t use them professionally, but just to mess round with when
writing, I find it’s a great tool.
And finally can you tell us whats next in the pipeline for yourselves
in 2015, Any Exciting News we should know about at Audiation
Magazine?
I’m already really looking forward to 2015. Everyone can expect more vocal
packs from me and Loopmasters, and also some work with Ableton. There will
be plenty more collaborations and possibly the release of my own EP. But
keep your ears open for that one.
As a session singer, I get to work with lots of different artists, from all over
the world. It’s an amazing feeling, so i’m looking forward to sharing with you all
the music that I and my collaborators come up with. For regular updates,
people can check out my website or follow me on Facebook. Everything I do
Singing Interviews advice for beginners to advanced.
GETTING THE TONGUE ‘OUT OF THE WAY’
To unleash your true potential, you need to get most things out of the
way. When I say ‘out of the way’ I mean, get everything in its natural,
correct place. We develop bad habits when we force our voice to do
things it shouldn’t do, such as bringing the chest voice up too high.
Doing this regularly means you’ll be using a high larynx (which can pull
the vocal chords apart – causing your voice to have that horrible
break). This is just one example of a bad habit. Some singers have a
nasally voice, others develop the habit of singing with a breathy tone.
Imagine the chords are your index and middle finger. Now apply press
your other hand on top of these fingers. If you press down harder, the
two fingers will not take the added weight and will push down, or at
least strain. The same thing happens with the chords. The root of the
tongue lies just above the vocal folds, so if the tongue is at the back of
the throat, it will push the chords down which will push the larynx
down, to create tension and block any air coming though. In other
words, your tone is blocked and it sounds like you’re singing at the back
of the throat.
Put your tongue to the back of your throat by moving it slightly. In this
position say “how are you doing?” The words will be muffled and
unclear. Now, put the tongue towards the front of your mouth (even
hanging out a little) and say “how are you doing?” Notice that it sounds
a lot clearer than the first time. This just shows how the tongue’s
position can affect your tone and its quality.
18
www.AudiationMagazine.com

Instead, we want to think about relaxing the tongue and bringing it
forward to allow for a free flow of air. How do we do this?
Do vocal warm-ups with the tongue hanging out of the mouth. This
may look silly, but the idea of this is to teach the tongue to lie at the
front of the mouth and through muscle memory this will happen over
time. This also works as a great exercise just before singing, as the
tongue is already where you want it to be, so you aren’t forcing it to be
in a different position. The sillier you feel, the better the exercise!
When pronouncing vowels, try to keep the tongue relaxed and touching
just behind the bottom front teeth. Don’t force the tongue to stay
there, just keep relaxed and allow the tongue to arch as it naturally
does. Practice singing “ae, ee, ie, oe, oo” on a scale, while keeping the tip
of the tongue touching the teeth. This will prevent the tongue curling
up too much and touching the roof of the mouth, which can block the
throat.
Being aware of the tongue will help you to control it and prevent it lying
at the back of the throat. It takes time to get out of this habit, but once
you learn, you will have no limits!
Ant Orange - Keeper
"Chilled, deep and thoughtful." Mizz Ruby
Ant Orange is an English DJ, currently based in Berlin. In his sets
we find a jazz influence on deep house, disco and uk garage. This
year his "Cuties" EP on American label Kolour Recordings was
supported by the one and only Steve Bug. Now, we are pleased
to have him onboard with Tanztone!
Ant's "Keeper" EP consists of two tracks; Keeper which is
floating, soft deep house. Warm organ samples, looped vocals
and few percussive elements make the track especially fitting
for both sunday sets and warming up at the club.
The second track is Monsieur Mouchoir. It's a subtle and refined
affair which appears to be inspired by soul and space-disco
from 70s/80s. Soft vocals, sub-bassline, analog lead are the
main body of this unique atmosphere which brings us back to
1976, to a romantic meeting with a girl in the restaurant.
Awesome material to be played in the morning or be listened to
with friends. Pure magic!
ROKURO
Welcome back to my reviews page for January 2015, I hope you all have a great
productive year in whatever you do.
To mark the start of the year i've compiled an Exclusive mix for Auditation magazine with
all the tracks listed this month,
The Dj Mix is getting on for 2 hours long and contains some top quality tracks that i've
collected of the past couple of months,
So feel free to check the Soundcloud link and leave a comment/Like or two if you are
feeling the mix.. I didn’t put it up as downloadable as being a producer myself I don’t think
its fair to give away other artists music, so hopefully you will hear some tracks you like
and go buy one or two of them to support the Artists and producers ;-)
Nora En Pura - Turn It around, This is the intro track to the mix and starts off with a
church organ and bell chord progression together with a breakbeat, before dropping into a
gorgeous piano chords and regular four to the floor drums.. The vocal is taken from an old
house track, “Turn It Around- I don’t want to lose you repeated vocal.. which you will
recognise, but like me, may not be able to put your finger on what old school track it's
taken from. But the good news is its available on a free download from their Soundcloud
page.
Second track on the mix is Cedric Zeyenne- Body Language. Enormous Tunes easily
being my favourite record label out there at the mo, so you will find a few of there's on the
mix. Really nice old school vibe to this, stabby bass and chords and nice shuffled Jacking
beats, breaks into a house organ riff and an R&B style vocal and chilled guitars, Top Track.
Up Next is one of my fav producers, Straight out of Russia.. Is Matvey Emerson with A
lright , I Love the vibe and groove this guy gets in his tracks.. I'll be doing a big feature with
him in Febuary's issue of Audiation so make sure you come back next month to check that
out.. Extremely soulful funky baseline acoustic Guitar and synth driven track this one. Out
now On Spirit Soul Recordings.
Frey & Natalie- Your not alone.. One of my fav tracks around at the moment this one,
This is a remake of the UK no 1 chart classic smash from 1996 olive your not alone,
Groovy Slap style bass, which is very current at the moment in Deep house, awesome
organ and string breakdown, This is one of the big ones out there for me at the moment.
its released on "No Definition recording, A Great Label coming out of Zurich Switzerland.
26
www.AudiationMagazine.com

Next on the Mix are a couple from Enormous Tunes, I did say there would be a few on here
this month from this label ;-). First up is the Funky 80’s sounding deep vocal house track
from Cedric Zeyenne called Over Again,
And no 6 on the mix is by the fantastic Croatia Squad, called Touch Me, Total dance
floor destroyer this one, Quite ravey chord tabs, with a repeating pitched down male vocal
saying, touch me here baby, won’t you kiss me there, Also comes complete with a missy
eliot sample, “you got what i want” Massive tune.
This Next track Needs no introduction , But i'll give it one anyway, is the old school 90’s
house inspired bomb by Dusky called Yoohoo , Very reminiscent of Adamski or early
90’s chemical brothers this one, And quite rightly has spent the last month at the top of
the Beatport charts..
Lucus and Steve are up next with there Debut track on Spinnin deep, Called Wasting
Moonlight, Great vocal by Bethany and the tracks called Blinded, Great piano stab chord
progressions on this track, very catch dance floor track, expect big things from the dutch
duo, Lucas and Steve in 2015.
Easily the biggest track around at the moment in my dj set this next one, Phillip
George- Wish You Were Mine, This is set for the Uk pop charts in 2015 I think, Hailing
from Nottingham UK, It's hard to believe the producer is only 21 years old, Wish you were
mine cleverly uses a pitched up familiar vocal from stevie wonder’s My Cherie Amour
combined with a fantastic old school Robin s - show me love style groove.. Excellent.
Another young very talented young producer who is ready to conquer the clubbing world
with his brand of fresh and funky deep house sound, Is Redondo, After his success with
the fantastic "love too deep", he’s back with another funky tech adventure called Sunshi
ne, out now on Spinning records, Track it down.
Over the last two decades Sandy Rivera has built a prolific reputation as one of the
most respected house producers in the world, The main behind the legend that Is Kings of
Tomorrow is back with Bang, I've put the EDX remix on the mix, but the original is well
worth checking out too, Catchy “ I wanna go Bang Bang” vocal from singer April who has
featured on a variety of previous Rivera tracks and Funky drums and Puncy bass and chord
stabs make this a sure fire winner. Out Soon On Ultramusic
Great little catchy male vocal house track this one, Don’t Look Now Ft Tom Tyler -
Feel Like, This one effortlessly builds with the development of snare driven drums, piano
house breakdown and a great climax that is sure to keep the party crowd moving till the
end of the night.. This is the Calliope Remix and is out now on Enormous tunes. Listen
Up Next hailing from the wonderful sunny city of Brighton Uk is the killer future house
track, Live Again by My Digital Enemy. Stomping piano house at its best this one,
Great female vocal too, A definite Beatport top 10 track this one, Stay tuned as ill be
doing an exclusive feature with this guys and there label , Zulu Records in 2015.
Cheeky little deep nu disco style up next by the always on form, Croatia Squad -
Scream For Pleasure, this track Borrows heavily from the David Bowie Track “ Lets
Dance”. Funky guitars and seriously groovy bass on this one, Epic.
Next is a track i reviewed a couple months back, but its such a wicked track i had to
include it on the Audiation mix.. Vintage Culture, Earstrip & Torha - Sure Thing (M
atvey Emerson Remix). Beautiful melodic track this one, with a funky bass and catchy
synth stabs make way for Deadmau5 Style chords, In a deep house track, Who Would
have thought ;-) definatly one of my favourite tracks of 2014..
One of the UK’s singing gem’s is Jessie Ware, This time were talking about the Shift
Key remix of her latest single You & I, Great deep tech house club ready remix is on
offer here, And as always Immaculate deep vocals from Jessie.
Out now on Spinnin deep is the the awesome Dante Klein Ertesuppe by Dante Klein,
Gorgeous acoustic sun drenched guitar track this one, Cool funky and original.
What can we say about the next track, Robin S- Show me love.. Probably in the top 3 of
classic house tracks, released in 1990 on champion records, This track has in?uenced
nearly every producer and Dj at some point, This is the Matvey Emerson new remix, Which
is a total remake of the original, Matvey has basically completely re-written all the music
and just used the robin S Acapella, One of my favourite remixes out at the mo, And the
good news its available as a free download via matvey’s Soundcloud page, Its easy to
picture yourself dancing the night away to this version,
The next one has been available since the end of september 2014, But its such a groovy
little number i thought id include it on the mix..Great Dj track Smith & Westin - My
Heart on Spinnin Deep.
Taking it down a little for the last to tracks on the mix is the wonderfully hynotic Deep
tech house belter that is, Emil Berliner- Whats Love (Ridney Re-Work) out now on
Great Stuff Recordings. Beautiful chord synth stabs with a deep house whats love vocal,
And last but not least on the Dj mix is Pray For Darkness by Kastis Torrau & Arnas
dark Dubby female vocal deep house at its best.
Just Her
Interviews Just Her
Those of you familiar with the House and techno scene will be no strangers
to Leicester based duo Him Self Her. Club hits such as ‘Gone Too Long’ and
‘Heartstopper’ and string of other releases on labels such as Crosstown
Rebels and Suara have made them firm favourites across the UK. As we turn
into the start of the year, one half of Him_Self_Her (Claire) embarks on the
start of a new Journey with a solo project under the moniker Just Her. With
lots of exciting things up coming this year including a release on Serkal Music
and the launch of her own label Constant Circles, we caught up with Just Her
for her take on the Audiation HOT 6.
HOT 6
1st record you ever bought?
The first 12 inch Vinyl I ever bought was Usura - Open Your Mind. What a
track that was at the time. My vinyl collection grew from there and is
absolutely huge now.
Favourite track you have made?
Him_Self_Her - Gone Too Long was a life changer and means a lot to me
as I wrote the vocals. But Ive recently finished a solo track where I am
singing vocals for the first time so Im feeling pretty proud of that one
too.
Favourite kit for making music?
Logic Pro, and a ridiculous array of plug ins. Although I am slowly building
the hardware side of my studio.
Your Dream Line up (self included)
Maya Jane Coles, Mind Against, Adriatique, Just Her ...maybe one day!!!
If you had to DJ a 3hr set of a different Genre what would it be?
It would definitely be electronica and I'd love it to be a live set instead of
DJing.. with some live instruments thrown in there.
One sentence that defines house and techno music?
I see it as a feeling more than a sound - it's a way of expressing and/or
feeling emotion. It's definitely a spiritual thing, as the famous lyrics said!
ROKURO
Speaking directly towards music, 2014 was a big one. It was packed with releases that
changed the sounds of artists, skyrocketed YouTube stars into fame overnight, and was
filled with airwaves that broadcasted the freshest music. However, for me, it was the
year where I developed a complete appreciation for the art.
Since I care for this magazine and every person in its ranks, I must be completely honest.
Before this year, I truly thought the only big releases in music were the ones on the
iTunes Top 100 charts. I never made the effort to expand my horizons and search for new
names. I was content with the same mainstream sound found in every department store
and popular radio station. It’s very embarrassing, I know, but I was sheltered and did not
have the knowledge to discover new sounds. This was my reality, until I started
volunteering for my college radio station.
February 2014 was when I joined the Music Staff and Promotions team for my school’s
radio station in Chicago. In July, I was given my own show. I was being introduced to types
of music that I never even knew existed. 2014 made me realize how sheltered I was in the
amount of independent bands and artists that are overlooked every day. I knew of
applications like SoundCloud, YouTube and Spotify, that allow people to post and share
their music, but I had no idea how to use it to their greatest advantage. I would search
for names I already knew, or possessed a vague familiarity to their name. Working at the
radio station changed my entire point of view on music, and then becoming a writer for
this magazine completely broadened my perspective
At the station, we are required to play at least ten songs from the “New Music
Rotation” box. This box is filled with CDs that were recently released from independent
music labels. Starting out, I was very hesitant on picking them since I literally did not
recognize any name. Luckily, we had a sticker that listed related artists, but that did not
help either because, of course, those artists have not entered my library yet. Picking the
songs were always a hit or miss, they could be the weirdest sounds that one could call
music, or something very fresh and cool. 2014 brought about new releases in every genre,
and these albums are my favorites.
Curtis Harding- Soul and Gospel was the driving force in developing this Atlanta artist’s
debut album, Soul Power. Combined with a powerful voice, backbeat on the lyrics and real
inspiring stories, this album builds a beautiful sense of human connection throughout
history. www.curtisharding.com
ROKURO
Mr. Twin Sister- Formerly known as Twin Sister, this band from New York released their
self-titled album in the fall. Its disco, electronic, indie pop and simply chill vibe makes it
something completely worth giving a listen. Definitely one of the most unique, yet
surprisingly enjoyable albums I came across this year. www.mrtwinsister.com
Jack White- Released this summer, this former White Stripes member’s second album,
Lazaretto, develops a strong mix of blues rock and alternative rock. Inspired by poems he
wrote at the age of 19, his creation landed himself a Grammy nomination for Best
Alternative Music Album. www.jackwhiteiii.com
The Orwells- I remember when I first heard of the release of their sophomore album,
Disgraceland. I was being trained at the station and one of the promotions directors
asked if I heard it yet, and that he has been non-stop listening to it. Following that convo, I
went home, blasted it and wanted more. Coming from the northern suburbs of Chicago,
this album is what one would expect from a textbook definition garage band. Raw,
unpolished, and very relatable. /www.theorwells.com
Grieves- Along with the fact that rap and hip hop aren’t exactly my go-to background
music, I was assigned to review, the fourth album of Benjamin Laub, better known as
Grieves. Straight o the point, Winter and the Wolves keeps you listening. Maybe it’s the
similarity to Macklemore, catchy hooks or the lyrics explaining harsh events in his life,
this album I very much respected, thus making it onto this list. I am very surprised at
least one single has not made many radio appearances yet. www.grievesmusic.com
Gorgon City, MNEK- Their single, “Ready For Your Love,” introduced me to house UK
garage music. It sort of reminds me of Musical D x Shemzy’s single “Radar,” released
earlier this year. Like I said before, I was very sheltered and thought that house music
was only the remixes people do of popular songs. I never knew of the independent styles
and mixes these artists can create. The chorus has a powerful beat that always makes
me want to dance.
I am very excited for 2015, to see what else will be discovered and released. I am
extremely open to suggestions, and will do my best to write about the most relevant and
enjoyable music. I plan to expand in my article-writing, and possibly learn how this whole
“press thing” works.
2015 will be a big one, and I can’t wait to see where music, this magazine and artists’
careers will go. I guess, for now, we all just need to listen and watch.
Tomorrowland Festival 2014
Josh Lasden, your musical journey
began in the neighbours garden! Were
you interested in music before this, or
did you initially want to follow another
path?
Well, I have a musically family. My niece
is the drummer, my cousin sang and
made the lyrics for Love At Breakfast.
Music was a common thing in our family,
is kinda sucked into the story. Where
i got my first drum when I was 4 years oldever you look, you see people smiling,
and learnt to jam on it. When I turned 13
years, my neighbour was producing and I
went along to start drumming and from
there on, a love for electronic music and
producing was formed.
Tell us about your musical style
The style can range from lounge music
towards progressive all with a futuristic
vision. We love to make music people will
like now and in future. For example,
Wavecatcher, is played by Armin van
Buuren, Laurent Garnier, Danny Howells
and lots of other worldstars around the
globe, but this track keeps interesting
people when they discover it now. That’s
our vision in the whole producing process
and also for the label and radioshow, El
Futuro.
music festival in the world,
Tomorrowland. What was it like?
It’s absolutely a big honor to play on such
event. Everything is so well organized,
from entering the festival, towards
playing there or visiting with friends. It’s
really a fairytale wherein you end up. And
everyone who’s working there or visiting
glad they can be a part of the adventure
and the atmosphere is can be described
as ‘luck’. Really, it gives you a lucky feeling
to be there on Tomorrowland. For an
artist it’s something like heaven, a
wonderful place to perform.
What is it like to play for a massive
crowd and do you prefer it to a smaller
audience?
Well, every gig or place has it’s specific
things that makes every performance
great. A massive crowd is fun, but a small
club or party gives you more interaction
with the audience.
38
You recently played at the best Dance
www.AudiationMagazine.com

What was your
impression on the crowd
reaction about your set?
Mostly, I love when people
are having a good time and
enjoy their time being
there. But sometimes you
need to search to bring
the perfect beat and
create an atmosphere
they will remember.
Who are your musical
influences?
The Detroit techno and
house scene, the UK
progressive scene and lots
of hip hop. I love the 90’s
hip hop music. When
asking about productions,
I love the music from
Maceo Plex, Nick Muir and
John Digweed, Tigerskin,
Andrea Oliva, Animal
Trainer, Oliver
Huntemann, Tube &
Berger, Solomun and so
on.
What does music mean to
you?
Music is life, a way to
express yourself and share
emotions.
What advice do you have
for people wanting to get
involved in music
industry?
Follow your passion, never
give up and remember
where you came from. If
success crosses your
path, always respect
those who gave you the
chance to do so and never
forget them. At the end,
those people will keep you
in their hearts and support
you.
What does the future hold
for you?
Releasing and producing as
many as I or we can. Giving
people a good time and
enjoy music and be
creative. Any plans, events
or ideals,
Any last words?
Thank you for your time,
never lose touch with
music, keep an eye on your
friends and don’t stop
raving.
FREEMASONS
I Caught up with my Fellow Brightonian’s and longtime friends from the UK,
Russell Small & James Wiltshire, From The Fantastic Dance Act The Freemasons to
chat about there new Album Shakedown 3..
Hi Guys, great to see your back with a new album, and containing over 30 Tracks.
Wow, so that must have taken some serious work. Are the tracks all new originals
or a mix of new tracks and remixes etc.?
It's a mixture of both, there are 4 remixes of other artists (London Grammar,
Hurts, Whitney Houston and John Newman) the rest of the tracks are Freemasons
productions.
Im loving the Shakedown 3 previews & minimixes, where did your passion and
inspiration come from regarding this new Album?
This time we wanted to give a little bit more, we have been working together for
10 years now, we wanted to make it quite special, a true reflection of what we
both are about musically both in terms of production and remixes, it contains
influences from different genres, eras and styles of house music, if you listen to
the Album its quite obvious sometimes who we have been influenced by on
certain tracks - wink wink .The album is spread over 3 CDs, the first is more laid
back, more appropriate for the Poolside or Beach or the bedroom for that matter.
CD 2 is more upbeat -more what people would probably expect from us i suppose,
the 3rd being an artist album - A collection of all the new material.
You have had many hits and been in the Europe dance & pop charts over your
career, what would you consider your proudest moments and achievements
since being in the music industry to date?
Probably our biggest achievement was being nominated for a Grammy for our
Beyonce Deja-Vu Remix, it would have been nice to have won, but there's still
plenty of time yet. In the UK we have had 7 top 20 chart hits, 2 of our Beyonce
remixes reached No 1. Our remix of Beyonce and Shakira- Beautiful liar
reached No 1 in 17 different countries around Europe.
How did the freemasons name come about?
Its the name of my local pub In Brighton Uk, it seemed as good a name as any
:-) However - just after we had chosen the name and our first single was about
to come out, James shared an evening train home from London with several
retired gentlemen who had been to the Lord Mayor of London's annual Dinner.
Their friendship and stories (including military service during the cold war )
were quite wonderful to hear .. Before they left they discussed the next lodge
meeting and it soon became apparent that they were Freemasons and at the
higher echelons of Brighton's Masonic order.. It was an interesting meeting....
life has a funny way of pointing you in the right direction !
The Sassy Yank
interviews:
I had the opportunity to catch up with one of Australia's leading
DJ/Producer/Record Label owner's Husky, fresh off his Bali Tour. Although
Husky has been making waves musically for awhile now he is fairly new to my
ears. I was immediately drawn to his fun, soulful, funky vibes!
What would you say have been the biggest inspirations to for you musically?
Hard to ignore my parents here obviously, as I grew up in a household that
always had music going and regular dinner parties and barbeques where I was
exposed to the likes or Randy Crawford, Simply Red, Franky Valli, The Singing
Detective, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and many more, So i guess I was a lover of
music from my early days.
Then once I found dance music i just loved anything with a groovy bassline, and
a disco influence. I became an advid fan and follower of many dj's and
producers, but the one's that continue to inspire me are Dimitri From Paris,
Miguel Migs, Joey Negro, Grant Nelson, Franky Knuckles and Knee
Deep/Lovebirds.
44 www.AudiationMagazine.com

You recently started your own record label, what would you say were the biggest
motivating factors for that decision?
Well I have actually got 2 labels, Random Soul Recordings (which I started with Yogi
in 2010) and Bobbin Head Music. Basically I was at a stage where I was sitting on a lot
of solo music and was getting a little tired of waiting for labels to put things out, or
just having to accept the way they promoted, released and remixed my tunes without
much of a say from me as the artist. I knew it was a massive undertaking to do another
label, but figured at this stage I just want to be in control of my music and have those
decisions as my own and then there's only myself to blame if it doesn't do so well ;)
What advice would you give to aspiring artists?
Stay true to yourself. Make, play and collect the music YOU love and try not to get too
bogged down in what is popular and what everyone else is doing. No point trying to
be someone else, they're already taken!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be? And, why?
Make it easier for artists to receive their royalties that they deserve. The systems in
place are designed to make labels money, and that's only if the labels know the
system in the first place. Sadly a lot of artists are not getting the funds they deserve
and the legwork you have to do to get them is ridiculous. Hardly a fair system sadly, as
it always benefits the larger, more organised labels.
Who would you want to collaborate or work with if you got the chance? What about
them makes you want to work with them?
Wow, the list is endless really.. some amazing vocalists and other producers.. it's hard
to pick any one to be fair.. However, i'd love to work with Joslyn's vocals. She sung on a
lot of Kaskade's early tracks, her sound is just captivating to me, for House music
anyway. Also LT from Naked Music, or on a different vibe maybe collabing with Pharrel
would be interesting production wise, and vocally :)
Out of all the things you have upcoming, what are you most excited about?
I am currently working on my first solo album, and I'll be very happy to see the back of
it haha. BUT also im excited to see how people will react to it. It's not reinventing any
wheels, but it's music from my heart and something I have enjoyed putting together,
so hopefully it's well received. I am also planning some more tours and travels for
later in the year, so there's plenty to feel blessed about and look forward to!
Ceremony Festival 2014
Saturday 13th September, Finsbury Park in North London played
host to Ceremony Festival, London’s last festival of the year leaving
everybody looking forward to next year. The vibe in the air had a similar feeling to
that found at Found Festival, always a great vibe, no doubt due to proceedings
being led by the same team, but Ceremony was different and gave itself its own
identity. The Numbers were there for the launch, with stages such as URBAN
NERDS and the SO FRESH SO CLEAN stage hosted by The Menendez Brothers
who had the legendary Todd Terry play an exclusive Hip-Hop set to a packed out
tent. This gave this 1 day event a different feel. Banter and character was in full
swing throughout park from start to end, which is full credit to everybody that
played a part, from the DJ, Ceremony team to the bar staff.
The layout for the festival was nice and comfortable and the weather was nice
keeping everybody in high spirits. The bars were all based in the centre with an easy
token system used for drinks. A high class of music was echoed throughout
Ceremony Festival across 7 stages, and this was to be expected. A special
performance by Inner City (live) along with DJ Sneak in the 51ST STATE arena,
Robert Owens, Bobby & Steve playing for GROOVE ODYSSEY, with the VIP hosted
by EGG LDN. Sante b2b Sidney Charles, East End Dubs and then Nick Curly b2b
Simon Baker for the closing set, just a few reasons among many why the MAGNA
CARTA tent was so busy. Nick Curly and Simon Baker effortlessly churned out
track after track, gripping everybody and keeping them moving till the very end.
The CEREMONY MAIN STAGE was not to be out done though with stellar
performances from Richy Ahmed and the Adana Twins, memories were made.
Tell us about yourself and
how your music career
began.
I began when I was 15 with
messing around with
sequencers. I gave my
parents a lot of headaches
during that time! In 2001 I
had my first release, in
2007 I got picked up by
Tiësto when I was a duo as
“Progression”, and he asked
us to do an album and a
warmup tour for his In
Search Of Sunrise
compilation.
Tiesto took you under his
wing, what is it like to work
with such a big name and
be in the eyes of a vast
worldwide fanbase?
That was absolutely
amazing, he is a very
friendly guy and I can’t
thank him enough for what
he did for me. 2007 was
very different from now
without much social
media, besides Myspace, so
the interaction was a lot
less, but the gigs were
amazing! It was always sold
out, of course they come
for Tiësto, but I always had
amazing response on the
gigs I did during the tour.
You are first a producer
and then a DJ, what would
you say are the key skills to
getting the right balance?
Yes I learned to produce
Daniel Wanrooy
first, after my releases
came out I got requests to
play in clubs and on events,
so that was the next step.
Learn to DJ. It was not so
hard to be honest, since
you understand the music
from producing and you
know how to count the
beats etc. I am glad I
learned to play with vinyls
in the beginning, that was a
whole other level than
nowadays. I think if your
music is good, people
come to the party to see
you and hear your music,
so they would like to hear
the tracks you produced in
combination with other
good tracks. A DJ always
has to adapt to the
audience, to give them a
great night.
What does music mean to
you?
A lot, I think about it day
and night. My head is
always filled with melodies
and music... sometimes so
much it keeps me awake. I
decided to live with it.
What advice do you have
for anyone looking to get
into the music
industry?
It changed a lot last 5 years
or so. Don’t expect just to
become the next new
top10 DJ, but it’s a long and
hard way to get some
knowledge at all. Just start
as a hobby and see where it
goes, finish your school
and don’t quit your job. I do
it fulltime now, but I did it
all slowly. First I worked 5
days a week, then 4, after a
few years I started a new
job for 3 days a week,
Monday and Friday were
for travelling and
producing.
After that went well, I
started to do it fulltime
and I never regret that
decision.
What does the future hold
for you?
I hope a lot more music.
Nowadays I also produce
all different kinds of music,
also pop things for singers
and I did some things for
commercials etc. Really
nice to do and expand your
boundaries, it’s also helpful
to open up your mind for
other influences.
Any last words?
Thanks a lot for the
interview and I hope to see
you all at one of my next
gigs.
Cessle Interviews: BREACH
Cessle
Singer, songwriter, DJ, producer and all-round music genius Ben Westbeech aka Breach
has come along way since releasing his 1st record “So Good Today” back in 2006. The
talented musician, Interviews and I say musician Just as Her he is skilled in the playing the cello and the piano,
has accumulated numerous records sales throughout a career spanning close to 10 years.
With hits like ‘Fatherless’, “Something for the weekend” and arguably what can be
described as the biggest dance track of 2013 with “Jack” it’s comes as no surprise to hear
he’s sells out venues across the country. Breach is often found on line ups with stellar
acts such a s Catz n Dogs, Cinnaman, and prior to his gig, Audiation magazine managed to
catch up with Ben at his studio in Amsterdam, his current city of residence.
What is your musical background history, how did you get into the industry?
I started DJ'in at 12, started making music when I was 18, moved to Bristol when I
was 19 and made my 1st record there. I got into it through a guy called Giles
Peterson and he signed my 1st record. I just have a friend a demo and she said a
friend she can play it to. Then about a week later I got a phone call from her saying
Giles has heard it and wants to sign it. So it was just like wicked. But I'd sorta made a
lotta music in Bristol for like 5 years just grinding it out.
What inspires you to make new music and where do you draw your influences
from?
At the moment just Amsterdam really. I moved here like a year and a half ago. It's
just a really inspiring place to live. Creatively, it just feels right creating here at the
moment. The house and techno scene is really diverse and forward thinking and it's
not really separatist like you get in some places. It's really open and everybody has
really good knowledge and you get to hear a lot of interesting records.
You’ve been around in the game for a little while now, but the release of jack
without doubt brought you untold success, what’s the story behind the track and
how did it change things?
The story behind it, it started as a B-Side HOT that 6 I was doing on Dirtybird. I made one
track and Claude Von Stroke said he really liked the one track and then he was like
let's 1st do record something you ever a bit bought? sleazier. Then I went to bed and woke up with the thing in
my head. I just sand it into my phone then went down the studio and recorded it. It
The first 12 inch Vinyl I ever bought was Usura - Open Your Mind. What a
was on my computer for a few days then I just went in. It only took a few hours
track that was at the time. My vinyl collection grew from there and is
really but the mixing down took a bit longer. It was the B Side for Let's Get Hot, and
then absolutely it just went huge crazy. now.
Favourite track you have made?
Him_Self_Her - Gone Too Long was a life changer and means a lot to me
as I wrote the vocals. But Ive recently finished a solo track where I am
singing vocals for the first time so Im feeling pretty proud of that one
too.
The EP release on Will Saul’s AUS label, how did that come about?
I've been friends with Will for years and really like AUS as a label. I play a lot of similar stuff
and with my label, I guess put it out. You know similar sort of artist that are on AUS and
Will just approached me and asked if I wanted to make a record.
Naked Naked was launched in 2012, what inspired the idea for the label and the name?
I dunno, I just wanted a record label. I was getting sent loads of demos and a couple of
them I really believed. in. I just wanted to put my own music out and other peoples'. It
started really nicely and quite slowly, we're on our 10th release in January, it's building and
building. I'm signing new artists, I can do little collaborations with people then put them
out. It's really nice thing to do. Then also you can build other peoples' careers, Lorca and
this guy Vis from Leeds who is dope. If I take people on I tend to work with them and help
them out.
How would you describe the music ethos of Naked Naked?
Emo House that's what I call it! I like House and Techno that is quite dancefloor. I go for
music that has emotion chords in it. Something happens somewhere that just gets you.
It's gotta have some feeling to it.
If you had to DJ a 3hr set of a different Genre what would it be?
It would definitely be electronica and I'd love it to be a live set instead of
DJing.. with some live instruments thrown in there.
What’s next for Naked Naked?
We have the new Lorca EP that's out next month called Calcatech, and then you've got
me and Cinnaman have a release, the 10th release called Liberty and the B-Side is
Avocado. I'm really excited about that one. He's like one of my best friends here. He's
Dutch and a big person out here in the Dutch House & Techno scene. He's resident at
Trow, he has a studio next door. We've wanted to make music together for ages and it
was really nice to be able to get to do that with one of your mates, then it came out
really good.
One sentence that defines house and techno music?
I see it as a feeling more than a sound - it's a way of expressing and/or
feeling emotion. It's definitely a spiritual thing, as the famous lyrics said!
Curtis Harding says that soul music, and his music, speak for
themselves. It’s self-evident on the Atlanta artist’s debut,
Soul Power. The driving sound of his electrified Stratocaster,
the foot-stomping backbeat and the lyrics swimming in
reverb—with something this flourishing, it’s almost
reductive to just dig around the roots.
The Kooks - Forgive & Forget (Oliver Nelson Remix)
The indie-rock band's track has been given a sexy disco-style
Leanne Louise's Debut EP:
Count My Blessings
I haven't enough positive words for Leanne, she is amazing and such an
inspiration. I've had the pleasure of hearing her progression since she started
out. The first time I heard her voice was through her also musically talented
producer of a brother RDubz, on a track called Crazy. At that instant, I fell in
love with her vocals. Through her journey her fans have grown stronger &
stronger and more people are getting to know her voice which is beyond super
because she is not only talented, she also has such a kind heart and deserves
every single positive aspect in the music career. I have no doubt she will
achieve great things and you should all get listening! This is her very first EP!!
So please support her, enjoy her voice, and keep an eye out for more to come!
Untitled Now you may think she ran out of imagination for the title but as you
listen you shall realise it is all justified. This track showcases the depth of her
vocals with an urban edge, and a really interesting rhythm which has me
hooked! Save Your Heart A lovely smooth piece. Nice tones on the strings
which accompany the gorgeous soft sweet vocals. No More Love, this
beautiful track shows not just Leanne's soft but strong vocals, it gives a little
insight into her lovely soul. Glass House This track has a slighter darker tone,
highlighting her soft tones with equally soft melodies. Bouncing them off nicely
against rough punchy vocals. Count My Blessings A rhythmic delight with the
vocals, yet with a smooth undertone of the melody.
