Olympic experience
for CWA students
A group of public services students at the
Isle campus enjoyed an experience of a lifetime
during the London 2012 Olympics.
Six eager students undertook their
level 2 award in stewarding and door
supervision as part of the national Bridging
the Gap programme.
Adrian Kent, lecturer, explained “Under
the programme, the students gained a
wide range of work experience and extra
qualifications enabling them to gain paid
jobs throughout the Olympics’ 34 venues”.
S&H Motorsport
Former CWA students Rob Sykes and Tom
Harrison have set up their own business,
S&H Motorsport, which provides independent
racing support to drivers with no mechanics
or mechanical trackside support.
Both Rob and Tom knew that motorsport teams
want as much experience as possible so they set
up an independent race car preparation business.
They put an advert on a website designed for
motorsport enquires and received an email from
a man who had bought a brand new Radical SR4
race car and wanted them to run his car at the
race events.
Since leaving college Rob and Tom have
been going away with the Radical to race
events and are currently leading the
championship overall.
Rob and Tom studied the BTEC Extended
Diploma in Motorsport at the Isle campus
in Wisbech.
The Maine man
Patrick Manifold previously studied the First
Diploma in Sport at CWA and is now captain
of the basketball team at Maine University in
America. He is also studying for a degree in
business management.
Leanne Takes the reigns
Former CWA student Leanne Brooks-Harley has
taken the reins and is now in charge of the equine
therapy centre at the Cambridge campus. She also
has responsibility for attracting and liaising with new
customers for the therapy centre, which is now open
to the general public.
“I completed a national diploma in horse
management at CWA and six months later started
working here as a member of the casual staff in the
equine yard. A year later, I started the BSc (Hons)
in Equine Studies run by CWA and ARU, which I
completed in June 2012.”
Rotary Young Chef
CWA hosted the local round of the 2013 Young Chef Awards
where four entrants were whittled down to one to go forward to
the district round.
Winner Daniel Freear, who previously studied at the Thomas
Clarkson Academy before studying professional cookery at
CWA, was challenged to prepare a three-course healthy meal for
two people costing less than £15.
He was presented with the Matthew Hunt Memorial Trophy and a
prize of a healthy eating cookery book.
Star student aims for
military career
Sam Oakes made important strides to achieve his target
of having a key role in the military and credits the two
years he spent on a uniformed services course at King’s
Lynn’s campus.
In September 2013 Sam started a three-year outdoor
leadership and adventure training degree at Worcester
University. From there he hopes to gain a commission at
Sandhurst with the parachute regiment and the chance
to achieve his ultimate ambition – to join the coveted 1
Para Special Forces Group.
The former Smithdon High School pupil was also named
Uniformed Services Student of the Year 2013 for the
King’s Lynn campus at the college student awards.
Education doesn’t
have to mean
staying in school
The government is increasing the age to which all young people in England
must continue in education or training. This will mean that students who
started year 11 in 2013 will have to continue in either education or training
until they are 18 years of age.
Raising the Participation Age (RPA) does not mean you have to stay in school
or go to 6th form. You are able to choose one of the following options once
you have finished year 11
• Full-time education, such as school, college or home education
• An apprenticeship
• Part-time education or training if you are employed, self-employed or
volunteering for at least 20 hours a week
Are you 19 or over
and looking to get
A-Levels
A-levels are one of the main routes to higher
education and university and offer you a wider
choice of employment opportunities.
Experience
The College of West Anglia is one of the
largest providers of A-levels in Norfolk and
Cambridgeshire – there are over 300 students
taking A-level programmes at our King’s Lynn campus.
Success
As well as being rated good by Ofsted, our A-level
results are among the best in the area – the pass rate in
2013 was 98%. Each year, successful students go on to
top universities across the country.
Why take A-levels at college?
College is very different from school, you are treated like
an adult right from the start. You will learn how to manage
your own time outside of lectures and develop new skills.
There are no bells, assemblies or uniform – you are free to
take control of your own learning in a sociable and mature
atmosphere. It is hard work but help is always on hand if
you need it – during your studies you will be supported by
your personal tutor who will regularly review your progress
and guide you in your next steps.
What do I study on an A-level programme?
The A-level programme is a two-year course. In year one
you may take up to 4 subjects at AS level. In year two
(known as A2), you can choose to continue with some or
all of the same subjects to make up a full A-level in each or
you can choose some new AS level subjects.
How do I use A-levels to apply for university?
Entry to university and colleges of higher education is
worked out on a points system – all your qualifications
add up to give you a score that determines your entry to
higher education. For example, an A grade at A2 level
(full A-level) is worth 120 points and an E grade is worth 40
points. These scores are halved for AS level qualifications.
20

Which subjects should I choose?
Think about what subjects you’ve enjoyed and been
good at. If you think you know what you’d like to do
as a career, find out what subjects would be useful and
relevant. If you are planning to go to university, think
about the type of course you might choose and look up
the subject requirements via UCAS.
go to university in Lincoln to study psychology. “I am really proud
of what I have done” said Aysha.
Previous King Edward VII student, Natalie Hodgkinson, from
King’s Lynn gained an A in business, B in sociology and C in
ICT. She now plans to study business and finance at the UEA in
Norwich. “A-levels are a lot harder than people think they are”
said Natalie.
James Taylor, who studied at Thomas Clarkson Academy,
achieved four A-levels, including an A in ICT. He also gained
Bs in law, business and English and will be studying business,
If you have got a good idea of where you want to
go with your career and like the idea of earning
while you learn, an apprenticeship could be for you.
Apprenticeships are designed for people aged 16
and above and provide the opportunity to gain skills
and qualifications through a structured programme
of practical work and classroom study.
Why become an apprentice at CWA?
The college is one of the largest and most
experienced providers of apprenticeships in the
region and offers a huge range of opportunities
across different industry areas. We work with
hundreds of employers across the East of England
to provide training to more than 1000 apprentices
every year. Our apprentices are successful – several
have won local and national awards.
As well as receiving expert tuition from our highly
trained staff, the college will assign a training
advisor to provide ongoing support for both
you and your employer.
What does an apprenticeship involve?
You will be employed, and at work for most of
your time as most training is on the job. The rest
of your training will be at college, either on a
day-release basis or over a number of days in a
block. The amount of time you spend at college
varies according to your apprenticeship.
You will work towards a competence based
qualification at either level 2 or level 3 as well as
taking knowledge based certificates and functional
skills. Vocational diplomas are designed by industry
and will be based upon your chosen occupational
area (e.g. brickwork, hairdressing, engineering,
childcare etc). The knowledge based qualifications
give you relevant underpinning knowledge to
support the practical skills you learn whilst functional
skills give you the valuable literacy and numeracy
skills to enable you to perform to a higher standard
in your job role.
If you are aged 16-18 when you start, your training
is fully funded by the government. If you are 19 or
over and on an intermediate (level 2) apprenticeship
the government partly funds your training – your
employer also pays a contribution to support this.
If you are 24 or over and studying an advanced
(level 3) apprenticeship, then you will need to get a
student loan and you employer will need to pay a
contribution. You may also have to purchase kit,
or uniform.
How long does an apprenticeship last?
It varies. Most last between one and two years,
though some take up to four. How long it takes will
depend on the profession you choose, your level of
ability and your employer’s needs.
Leisje wins two
hairdressing awards
Leisje Forge, who studied at Fakenham High
School, is a level two apprentice with the
college and works at Alan Hair Designs in
Fakenham. Leisje won both the Affinage hair
award and the college phoenix technical award
for outstanding achievement in hair after a
competition held at the college.
World renowned hair stylist ‘MK’ presented her
with the awards during a visit to the college
where he spent the day working with students
and staff. MK has won Barber of the Year
several times, and has worked on films, TV,
with celebrities and fashion shows all over
the world.
Leisje said “The competition was a great
experience and allowed me to express my
creative talents. I’m over the moon to of won!”
Carol Gallagher, programme manager for hair
and beauty, said “We were thrilled with what
our apprentices achieved on the day.
They thoroughly enjoyed competing and
worked extremely hard throughout the day to
impress MK.”
Speaking about the day, MK said “I think
the college facilities are astounding and
encapsulate that whole feeling of working
in a commercial salon. It is so important that
we get our young hair professionals of the
future fully equipped for industry and it is
essential that students experience a variety
of techniques and participate in
competitions to expand their skills,
build confidence and add to
their portfolio.”
A bright spark
Jack didn’t really enjoy academic study
and quickly realised that he was gifted
with practical skills and wanted to
pursue a career in the electrical trade.
He attended an interview at CWA
and secured an apprenticeship with a
Wisbech based company.
Jack’s journey through the four year
apprenticeship gave him a huge variety
of electrical tasks to learn on-site whilst
challenging him academically in college.
Being able to relate the practical aspect
of work with his academic study gave
Jack the knowledge to pass the majority
of his electrical based exams with credit
or distinction grades.
Aged 25, Jack took the decision to
start his own business ’Jack Oughton
Electrical’. Successfully trading for three
years Jack continues to expand his
client database by ensuring his work is
first class. The business has become so
successful that Jack appointed his first
electrical apprentice in August 2012.
wins silver at
WorldSkills UK
Media make-up student Amanda
Hughes claimed the silver medal in
the WorldSkills UK competition finals
held in Birmingham.
The competition theme was
‘Hollywood’ the golden age and the
the competition.
Amanda scooped silver with her
amazing interpretation of Hollywood.
“I have been completely taken over
by body painting and have finally
found my true passion. I dream of it
Engineering
Engineer your future.
Are you practical but like using your brain
too? Can you communicate your ideas clearly
to others? If this sounds like you, engineering
could be your subject.
Engineering is the science, discipline, art and
profession of acquiring and applying technical
knowledge to design, materials, structures,
machines, devices, systems and processes that
safely realise a desired objective or inventions.
Career options range from design and
development to engineering technician
and from motor vehicle technicians to
motorsport engineers.
So, if you like the idea of combining
science, technology, maths and practical
experience with imagination, reasoning
and good communication skills,
think about a career in engineering.
If English isn’t your main language, you
can enrol on a course to help you improve
your language skills. These courses are
called ESOL or English for Speakers of
Other Languages.
Improving your English will give you the
and confidence at home and work, help you
to apply for jobs, help you work in a team,
ESOL students see the sights
The ESOL Routes to Learning students returned from
Derbyshire with their legs aching from three days of walking in
the Peak District. The group stayed at the beautiful Hartington
Hall youth hostel and took day trips out on walks and visits.
Only a small elite of the toughest students completed walks on
all three days, while others took the slightly easier options of
visits to Chatsworth House, Bakewell and Buxton on the second
and third days.
This trip was a superb opportunity for the students to discover
some new parts of England, and marvel at the beauty of
landscapes which contrast dramatically with West Norfolk
and the Fens.
A talent for fashion
Fashion students from the Isle campus
their creative and inspiring work, an
exciting fun and funky mix of fashion
collections: 1940’s tea dresses, winter
tartan, tailored jackets and trousers,
military jackets and historical inspired
Both first and second year students
spent nine months working intensively
Foundation
Studies
E
L1
If you have few or no previous qualifications, you
have a learning difficulty or disability, or you are just
unsure of coming to college foundation studies has
developed a number of ‘Bridges’ to help our learners
cross the gap between where they are now and where
they want to be.
The Bridge to Independence
Courses within this area will help you develop your
independent living skills. Build your confidence in
managing things for yourself, managing your money,
cooking for yourself and travelling independently.
These courses develop essential personal, social
and practical skills and will help build self-esteem
and confidence.
The Bridge to Education
If you need to build your skills before you can access
one of the level 1 or 2 courses we offer at CWA, or our
bridge to employment, then the bridge to education
may be for you. Courses develop general skills for
college or work towards a specific vocational area.
The Bridge to Employment
If you are looking for a way to build your employability
skills then the bridge to employment courses will be a
great place to start. Courses in this area help to build
self-confidence and concentrate on specific enterprise
and employment skills, through supported work
experience and job coaching.
The Bridge to Inclusion
Some learners with learning difficulties may be unable
to attend one of our main campuses but can still access
one of the bridges through our outcentre. Courses in
our outcentre are designed for young adults who have
the potential to progress but require a more
supported learning environment. Groups are small
and it is possible to have bespoke courses for
individuals with particularly challenging needs.
Students can progress from the outcentre to main
campus courses or employment.
Throughout the college we have a vast experience
of supporting learners across all our campuses with
a range of needs including
• Autistic Spectrum Disorder and
Asperger’s Syndrome
• Mild, moderate or severe learning difficulties,
including ODD and ADHD
• Down’s Syndrome
• Hearing/visual impairment
• Tourette’s
• Low self-esteem
• Physical mobility difficulties
• Diabetes or epilepsy
• Communication difficulties, including Makaton
and other systems
Don’t worry if your particular need is not listed.
We meet with all students before enrolling you onto
any course to talk about your individual support needs.
We will work with you to find ways for you to be in
control of your own learning, checking regularly to
make sure your support is right.
So perhaps now is the time for you to take that step
towards building your bridge to your future….
Project Search
Project Search is an
exciting, employment
focused, education
programme designed to
give you the opportunity
to learn more about the
world of work, develop
your employability skills
and to try out your skills
in real work rotations. The
project is a partnership
between the Queen
Inspired by science?
Would you like to experience real science
using all the latest technology as it is applied
in the everyday world?
Science helps us to understand, or to
understand better, the history of the natural
world and how the natural world works, with
observable physical evidence as the basis of
that understanding.
This is done through observation of natural
phenomena, and/or through experimentation
that tries to simulate natural processes under
controlled conditions.
In criminal cases forensic scientists are often
involved in the search for and examination
of physical traces which might be useful for
establishing or excluding an association
between someone suspected of committing a
crime and the scene of the crime or victim.
Our course will give you the opportunity to
apply science to the world around you. Units
Signalling a bright future
Jordan Thatcher is following in her family’s footsteps by signing up for
an Army career. The former Neale-Wade and Isle campus student is
currently in the Royal Corps of Signals after successfully completing a
uniformed services course.
Proud Jordan returned to the college earlier this year to share some of
her experiences with current students and is now off to Germany for
further training. She explained “Being at college and going through
the Army application process has really developed me as a person. The
physical training sessions we had at college has made me fitter and
mentally stronger; it has helped me achieve fitness targets that I thought
I could never reach. I have become more confident and have been able
to coach my own PT sessions as well as setting up circuit training, which I
could never have done before. I couldn’t thank my tutors enough”.
The College of West Anglia in
partnership with Anglia Ruskin
University offers a range of
higher education courses at all
three campuses.
Why study a HE course at college?
Major differences between the way UK colleges and universities
deliver higher education (HE) courses mean that college students
are graduating with an average of around £17,500 less debt than
their university counterparts, according to research released by the
Association of Colleges (AoC, Nov 2010).
The AoC’s findings highlight how a combination of greater
opportunities to work part-time while studying, the ability to live at
home and reduced travel costs are all key factors in minimising the
overall debt levels of HE college students.
Advice and guidance
We have a dedicated higher education support team to help you
throughout your time with us. This may include help with finance
and general advice to support your studies. We also have a student
advisor service for help and advice with issues that may be affecting
your personal or academic life. To contact the HE support team
please call 01553 815439.
Accommodation
Student services can provide details on a range of accommodation
options for students studying at all campuses, including private
rented housing and home stay. The type of accommodation
Tetiana Mikalova – Foundation Degree (FdSc) Early Years,
Playwork and Education
“I would recommend CWA because it’s friendly and a very
supportive place to complete your studies. I also like the fact it’s
local so I don’t need to move away to complete a degree. Once
I have finished the foundation degree I would like to complete
the full degree and then progress into teacher training.”
“I would rate it 10 out of 10 because the support is really great
and the staff are lovely.”
Stefanie Spielhaupter – BSc (Hons) Equine Science
“I was thrilled when I saw that the College of West Anglia
worked in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University and offered
the type course I have been looking for. It also allowed me to
stay in the beautiful city of Cambridge.”
Sairead Wild – BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing with Applied
Animal Behaviour
“We have an opportunity to do work placements at local
approved practices, which is organised by the college. This
gives a real-life learning experience as part of the curriculum;
I can’t think of many degree courses which offer such a level
of realism. The benefits of this sort of opportunity are many –
if you prove yourself willing and capable, you may well be
rubbing shoulders with your future employer!”
Steve Denby – BA (Hons) History and Sociology
“The quality of teaching and the diversity of students, young
and old, and from all walks of life makes it a great experience.
