Evaluation and assessment of Uruguayan Forest Certification scheme against the requirements of the PEFC Council
benefit to society.
4.2 e The Standard requires the protection
of natural forests, water and soil
resources and biodiversity during forest
management and harvesting.
4.2 f The Standard requires infrastructure to
be planned, constructed and
maintained to “accomplish a
Sustainable Forest Management”.
Delivery of sustainable forest
management explicitly requires
damage minimisation to ecosystems.
4.2 g The Standard requires forest
management practices to conserve
native plant and animal species,
control exotic animal and plant species
that might represent a threat or pest
and control animal load in areas under
husbandry and/or joint use.
4.2 h The Standard requires silvicultural
practices to include procedures for
conservation of biological diversity
through retention of dead and fallen
and standing for fauna habitats and
maintenance of ageing forests of “rare
or singular species”. The Standard also
requires forest management practices
to consider “the potential effects of
these measures on the safety of people
and the protection and stability of
forests and surrounding ecosystems
simultaneously”.
4.2 i The Standard requires the conservation
of sites of special biotypes (including
catchment, wetlands and rocky
surfaces) and their restoration if
appropriate.
5.1 Guidelines for forest management planning
5.1 a The Standard requires forest
management planning to maintain and
improve the protective functions of
forests by “seeking a balance between
conservation of natural resources,
historic-cultural and socio-economic
aspects, productivity (technical,
economic and financial) and general
society’s well being”. Key components
