Appendix 5 – Biography Clinical Leadership Profiles Dr Tony Becker Chair, Joint Clinical Forum, Wairarapa Fellow of the Accident and Medical Practitioners Association MRNZGP Tony is the Chair of the Joint Clinical Forum in the Wairarapa (DHB and Primary Care Clinicians), and is both a GP and Clinical Leader with Wairarapa’s largest General Practice, Masterton Medical. Tony also has a qualification in Emergency Medicine and has served time at the Masterton Emergency Department. He has played an important role in the development of Long Term Conditions capability in the Wairarapa, and has a special interest in that area. Dr Richard Tyler Chair, Compass Health Wellington Trust Chair, Capital PHO Partner GP at Johnsonville Medical Centre Chairman of the Medical Assurance Group of Companies Director of Compass Health Limited Executive Member of IPAC Executive Member of RNZCGP Dr Tyler has been and remains an active General Practitioner in Wellington for over 29 years during which he has been involved in a wide range of medical & medico-political committees and organisations. He was instrumental in establishing the Wellington After-hours & was its founding chairman for 5 years. A founding Director of the Wellington IPA (WIPA) when IPAs were in their infancy he has continued to be involved in the rapidly changing health management scene and is currently Chairman of Compass Health Wellington Trust and Compass Health Ltd management services organisation which combined manages eight PHOs. Dr Helen Rodenburg Chair, Clinical Quality Board – WCPHO /Compass Health Board Trustee, Capital PHO FRNZCGP (Dist) Partner Island Bay Medical Centre Director Medical Assurance Society Dr Rodenburg has been a General Practitioner at Island Bay Medical Centre for past 25 years, during which time she has been a passionate leader championing the message of Clinical Quality across the WIPA and subsequent Compass network. Helen has represented General Practice in a 130
number of national forums and organisations including President of the College of General Practice (2001-2003). Helen regularly presents nationally and internationally, providing key insights on the role and value of primary care in providing mental health and wellbeing services. Chris Kerr Manager, Clinical Services – WCPHO /Compass Health Registered General and Obstetric Nurse, Post Grad Diploma in Primary Health Care(with Distinction) Masters in Primary Health Care (thesis underway) Tenure: 3 months Chris brings to Compass over twenty five years health care experience, having worked across a range of nursing disciplines in primary and secondary care. Chris was fully involved in the development of the Kapiti PHO from a community perspective as Manager of Horo te Pai Health Services. Her involvement with the PHO continued as she was appointed as a Trustee and subsequent Chair of the PHO. Holding a key role in providing direction for the Clinical Quality Team and supporting the wider primary care workforce, Chris brings the strengths of management and clinical expertise together. Chris also sits on the Primary/Secondary Clinical Governance Board representing Compass Health PHO’s. Management Team Profiles Cathy O’Malley CEO, – WCPHO /Compass Health Bachelor of Physical Education (Otago University) Tenure: 14 years Cathy is the Chief Executive Officer of Compass Health, WIPA and all 11 other entities the management companies provide support to. Her knowledge of the primary care environment is extensive and has proven invaluable to the implementation of the Government’s Primary Health Care Strategy, via Primary Health Organisations. Joe Howells General Manager Primary Care Services – WCPHO /Compass Health Bachelor of Commerce, MBA (Auckland University) Tenure: 6 years Joe has 20 years experience in various general management roles in the health sector. These roles have included senior management positions in finance, integrated care, and operational management in four DHBs and Area Health Boards. Joe managed the Wairarapa Community PHO from its establishment in 2004 to 2008.
