Studies of Religion 1<br />

Overview<br />

One Unit for each of <strong>the</strong> Preliminary and <strong>HSC</strong> Year Board Developed<br />

Course.<br />

Studies of Religion I promotes an awareness, understanding and<br />

application of <strong>the</strong> nature of religion and <strong>the</strong> influence of religious traditions,<br />

beliefs and practices on individuals and society, with an emphasis on <strong>the</strong><br />

Australian context.<br />

Content<br />

Preliminary Course<br />

• Nature of Religion and Beliefs.<br />

• Two Religious Tradition Studies: Christianity and one o<strong>the</strong>r selected<br />

from Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism. Each Tradition Study<br />

covers: Origins, Principal Beliefs, Sacred Texts and Writings, Core<br />

Ethical Teachings, Personal Devotion.<br />

<strong>HSC</strong> Course<br />

• Religion and Belief Systems in Australia post-1945.<br />

• Two Religious Tradition Depth Studies: Christianity and one o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

selected from Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. Each Depth<br />

Study covers: Significant People and Ideas, Ethics, Significant<br />

Practices in <strong>the</strong> Lives of Adherents.<br />

Special<br />

Requirements<br />

Excluded from completing Studies of Religion II<br />

A one and a half hour written examination<br />

Assessment /<br />

Homework<br />

<strong>Information</strong><br />

Completion of Assessment Tasks throughout <strong>the</strong> course.<br />
