Special<br />
Requirements<br />
Placement into courses will be determined by two Criteria Examinations<br />
in conjunction with student performance throughout Year 10.<br />
Prerequisites: The course is constructed on <strong>the</strong> assumption that students<br />
have achieved <strong>the</strong> stage 5.3 outcomes.<br />
The Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department orders “The Success One Past Paper<br />
Booklet”. Students are expected to purchase this booklet. The cost is<br />
charged to <strong>the</strong>ir school account.<br />

<strong>Information</strong><br />
External Assessment<br />
Two written examination papers. One paper is identical to <strong>the</strong> paper of three<br />
hours duration for <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics course. The o<strong>the</strong>r paper, of two hours<br />
duration, is based on <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Extension 1 course and consists of<br />
seven questions of equal value.<br />
No more than <strong>the</strong> equivalent of two questions will be based on <strong>the</strong><br />
Preliminary course. Questions based on <strong>the</strong> Preliminary course can be<br />
asked when <strong>the</strong>y lead-in to questions based on topics from <strong>the</strong> <strong>HSC</strong> course.<br />
Marks from <strong>the</strong>se lead-in questions will not be counted in <strong>the</strong> two-question<br />
allowance from <strong>the</strong> Preliminary course.<br />
Board-approved calculators, geometrical instruments and approved<br />
geometrical templates may be used.<br />
Internal Assessment<br />
Five Extension I Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Assessment Tasks are to be completed.<br />
Five Ma<strong>the</strong>matics (2U) Assessment Tasks are to be completed.<br />
The objectives of <strong>the</strong> course are grouped into two components. Component<br />
A (70%) is primarily concerned with <strong>the</strong> student’s knowledge, understanding<br />
and skills developed in each Content Area listed in <strong>the</strong> syllabus. Component<br />
B (30%) is primarily concerned with <strong>the</strong> student’s reasoning, interpretative,<br />
explanatory and communicative abilities. A number of tasks will be used to<br />
determine a student’s school-based assessment and any one task may<br />
contribute to measuring attainment of both components.<br />
School assessment for <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Extension 1 course can be based<br />
on <strong>the</strong> whole of <strong>the</strong> course (Preliminary and <strong>HSC</strong> courses). Assessment for<br />
this course will not begin until Term 4 of Year 11).<br />
Homework<br />
Homework will be assigned on a daily basis - 40 - 60 minutes should be<br />
spent completing <strong>the</strong> set homework and consolidating work.<br />
