English Standard 2 Unit<br />
Overview<br />
In <strong>the</strong> Preliminary English (Standard) course, students explore <strong>the</strong> ways<br />
events, experiences, ideas and processes are represented in and through<br />
texts.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> <strong>HSC</strong> English (Standard) course, students reflect on and demonstrate<br />
<strong>the</strong> effectiveness of texts for different audiences and purposes.<br />
Content<br />
Main Topics Covered:<br />
In <strong>the</strong> Preliminary English (Standard) course students are required to:<br />
• study Australian and o<strong>the</strong>r texts;<br />
• explore a range of types of text drawn from prose fiction, drama,<br />
poetry, non-fiction, film, media and/or multimedia texts<br />
• undertake wide reading programs involving texts and textual forms<br />
composed in and for a wide variety of contexts<br />
• integrate <strong>the</strong> modes of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing<br />
and representing as appropriate<br />
• engage in <strong>the</strong> integrated study of language and text<br />
<strong>HSC</strong> Course<br />
The course has two sections:<br />
• The <strong>HSC</strong> Common Content which consists of one Area of Study<br />
common to <strong>the</strong> <strong>HSC</strong> Standard and <strong>the</strong> <strong>HSC</strong> Advanced courses<br />
where students analyse and explore texts and apply skills in<br />
syn<strong>the</strong>sis<br />
• Modules that provide elective choices, which emphasise particular<br />
aspects of shaping meaning and demonstration of <strong>the</strong> effectiveness<br />
of texts for different audiences and purposes. Students are required<br />
to choose one elective from each of <strong>the</strong> Modules.<br />
Special<br />
Requirements<br />
Students will receive books at cost price; <strong>the</strong> cost being charged to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
school account. Students will be placed in this course if <strong>the</strong>ir School<br />
Certificate mark is less than 75.<br />

Homework<br />
<strong>Information</strong><br />
Students will be assessed on a range of skills including speaking, prepared<br />
and unseen writing tasks, <strong>the</strong> collation of research materials, as well as<br />
examination tasks.<br />
