However, free-ranging ASC otters may consume a diet of mostly fish (Foster-Turley 1992), thus may have a higher tolerance for vitamin A due to the high levels which may occur intheir natural diet.(α)When mostly fish diets are offered, the presence of unsaturated fatty acids and thiaminases causes thebreakdown of these vitamins. Thus, dietary levels of 400 IU vitamin E / kg of dry diet and 100-120 mgthiamin / kg of dry diet are recommended (Engelhardt and Geraci 1978).(β) The recommended Ca:P ratio is between 1:1 and 2:1.Table 1.5.
