FBy Mike Detty, L-1627our years worth of planning, designing and engineeringwent into Springfield's recentlyintroduced high-capacitypistol. I first handled this newpistol at the 1997 Limited Nationalsand was so impressed with the wayit felt in my hand that I immediatelyrequested a test and evaluation sample."We wanted to make sure that itwould be 1911-compatible, workwith existing holsters and accept thereadily available Para-Ordnancehigh-capacity magazines," reportedSpringfield's top professionalshooter, Rob Leatham. "We had theadvantage of being the last ones inwith a widebody, and we learnedfrom the others' mistakes. We triedto design a gun without any of theshortcomings of cast frames."Indeed, above all else, the thingthat sets the new Springfield gunapart from all other high-capacityguns is its forged frame. "Framesmachined from a billet of forgedOften, the best things come in small packages.- SLIDE RACER - NEW!411111111M1=111V-=-- -7-11Springfield's New WidebodyLow PROF ILEI IV 11=1 IL-9Springfieldzines.steel have a more dense grain structurewhich translates into strength.Practical shooters put more roundsthrough their guns than all othershooting disciplines combined andthese new frames will hold up," emphasizedLeatham at the 1998 SHOTShow (Shooting, Hunting and OutdoorTrade Show) in Las Vegas."T" F=t IPrecision Parts for the Serious Shooter - call today!P.0.8ox 727 Hardwick, Yr 05843 I-802-172-8263Armory's new high-capacity 1911 will accept Para-Ordnance maga-Leatharn pointed to the recoilspring dust cover area of his Limitedpistol saying, "We beefed up thedust cover area where other manufacturershave had failures." I notedthat other than some checkering onthe front strap and under the triggerguard the only visible modificationto the frame was that Leatham hadcut off the trigger guard and weldedon a squared guard that gives him alittle more room for his trigger finger."As far as I'm concemed, the bestthing about the new gun is the wayit feels. No other hi-cap gun feels ascomfortable in my hand as the newSpringfield," Leatham told me. Afterreceiving my test gun, I'd haveto say that I agree with him. Part ofthe reason for the comfortable gripis a very aggressive cut where thetrigger guard meets the frame. Therounded cut allows the third fingerto ride very high up. Another factoris the synthetic grips which are slimtowards the front strap and wider inthe rear. The sample gun I received was astainless-steel model with standardfeatures. It came in a lockable blueplastic case with two 10-roundmagazines, but, as mentioned earlier,Para-Ordnance's high-capacitymagazines will work just fine in thegun. Cosmetically, the gun is beautiful. The frame is heavily beadblasted and is a dark matte gray, and the flats of the slide are brightlypolished. Fixed three-dot sights, a18 FRONT SIGHT • May/June 1998
lowered and flared ejection port, extendedthumb safety and skeletonizedhammer complete the package. My sample was in .45 ACP andfeatured a standard barrel and bushing.New guns in .40 S&W and .38Super will have supported barrels. The lightweight alumimun trigger isnot adjustable and its length is halfwaybetween a short and long trigger.I'm told that aftermarket Paratriggers will not work irk these gunswithout a lot of work. In fact, theonly parts that will interchange, other than basic 1911 parts, are themagazines and the magazine releases.Springfield's release, by theway, is steel and can be built up sothe gun will work with STI high-capacitymagazines.The frame itself features bevelingon the mag well and verticalgrooves on the front strap. Springfield'splunger tube housing is abeefy affair that is riveted to theframe for a lifetime of trouble-freeservice. An extended ejector is usedfor reliability. Springfield wiselychose to crimp bushings into theframe for the grip screws rather thanjust thread the frame. Stripping thegrip-screw thread means replacingthe bushing, a simple procedurecompared to welding up the frame, drilling the hole, and re-threading it.If you like to outfit your 1911swith ambidextrous safeties, there'sjust one type that will work with theSpringfield gun. Because the grippanel does not cover the right sideof the frame where most ambidextroussafety legs are retained, shooterswill have to use the King GunWorks safety. King's safety has anextra-long hammer pin with a dovetailcut on its end which protrudesout the right side of the frame. Thesafety has a corresponding cut to acceptthe hammer pin. Leatham toldme that he actually prefers thissetup as he feels the safety isstronger than other setups.Frame-to-slide fit on my gun wasvery tight with just a hint of bindingthat disappeared after about 100rounds. I took the pistol out to functiontest it and almost didn't shoot itfor groups. First of all, this isn't atarget gun and second, this pistolhad an eight-pound trigger pull.Fortunately, curiosity got the betterof me, and I set tip some targets at25 yards. I fired the groups over aMillett BenchMaster from the proneposition. With a handload consistirkgof a 250-grain Laser-Cast bullet and3.2 grains of Clays, my five-groupaggregate measured just 1.44 inches. My single best five-shot groupmeasured just 0.95 inch. I found itamazing that a standard gun with astandard barrel and bustling coulddeliver this level of accuracy. In all,I fired more 300 rounds and experiencedno failures or stoppages. If you're looking for a strong, accurateand dependable high-capacitypistol, check out Springfield'snew gun which is available in blue($679), stainless ($709) and parkerized($659). If you'd like a high-capacityproduction gun with abeavertail, adjustable sights andtrigger, take a look at the new TrophyMatch with a suggested retailprice of $1,015 for blued, $1,059 forstainless and $1,049 for bi-tone.
