This was not alwaysthe case.My introduction to practical pistolshooting came from readingGuns Sr Ammo magazine. The firstissue I ever was the December 1964edition. What had first caught myattention was the shoot-out by JeffCooper between the 9mm Luger cartridgeand the .45 Auto cartridge.The 9mm was fired from a Luger,naturally, while equally naturally,the .45 was fired from a 1911.Part of the test compared the cartridge'spenetration into a car. Shotsfired through the doors and thetrunk lid were evaluated. Perhaps Ihad simply never seen anyone shootat cars in a magazine before, but itwas interesting reading for a teenagerinterested in guns.Cooper championed the fledglingsport of practical pistol, developedout of his earlier efforts at comparingequipment and techniquesthrough a series of matches held insouthern California beginning in thelate 1950s. These early efforts began,as I understand it, as Leatherslapmatches. I have never heard of anyreal power requirements during thisperiod other than "full charge ammunition."The shooters participated withall sorts of guns. They tried anythingand everything as long as the borewas of 9mrn/.38 diameter and thepower met or exceeded 9mrnLuger/38 Special factory ammunitionlevels. It is hard fo me to imaginemanipulating the safety on aLuger pistol with any amount ofspeed when compared to a 1911.Today there are numerous videosof various matches and peoplegiving both the new and the experiencedshooter the means of studyingother techniques. This, combinedwith inexpensive home video cameras,gives today's shooter many advantages.Watching a video of championshooters doing a particular skill andthen watching one of yourself doingthe same thing is a great trainingaid. You can easily see areas that canbe improved. Most find that theprinciple problem is wasted motion.They may look quick, but it's becauseof all the extra movement.
