lowered and flared ejection port, extendedthumb safety and skeletonizedhammer complete the package. My sample was in .45 ACP andfeatured a standard barrel and bushing.New guns in .40 S&W and .38Super will have supported barrels. The lightweight alumimun trigger isnot adjustable and its length is halfwaybetween a short and long trigger.I'm told that aftermarket Paratriggers will not work irk these gunswithout a lot of work. In fact, theonly parts that will interchange, other than basic 1911 parts, are themagazines and the magazine releases.Springfield's release, by theway, is steel and can be built up sothe gun will work with STI high-capacitymagazines.The frame itself features bevelingon the mag well and verticalgrooves on the front strap. Springfield'splunger tube housing is abeefy affair that is riveted to theframe for a lifetime of trouble-freeservice. An extended ejector is usedfor reliability. Springfield wiselychose to crimp bushings into theframe for the grip screws rather thanjust thread the frame. Stripping thegrip-screw thread means replacingthe bushing, a simple procedurecompared to welding up the frame, drilling the hole, and re-threading it.If you like to outfit your 1911swith ambidextrous safeties, there'sjust one type that will work with theSpringfield gun. Because the grippanel does not cover the right sideof the frame where most ambidextroussafety legs are retained, shooterswill have to use the King GunWorks safety. King's safety has anextra-long hammer pin with a dovetailcut on its end which protrudesout the right side of the frame. Thesafety has a corresponding cut to acceptthe hammer pin. Leatham toldme that he actually prefers thissetup as he feels the safety isstronger than other setups.Frame-to-slide fit on my gun wasvery tight with just a hint of bindingthat disappeared after about 100rounds. I took the pistol out to functiontest it and almost didn't shoot itfor groups. First of all, this isn't atarget gun and second, this pistolhad an eight-pound trigger pull.Fortunately, curiosity got the betterof me, and I set tip some targets at25 yards. I fired the groups over aMillett BenchMaster from the proneposition. With a handload consistirkgof a 250-grain Laser-Cast bullet and3.2 grains of Clays, my five-groupaggregate measured just 1.44 inches. My single best five-shot groupmeasured just 0.95 inch. I found itamazing that a standard gun with astandard barrel and bustling coulddeliver this level of accuracy. In all,I fired more 300 rounds and experiencedno failures or stoppages. If you're looking for a strong, accurateand dependable high-capacitypistol, check out Springfield'snew gun which is available in blue($679), stainless ($709) and parkerized($659). If you'd like a high-capacityproduction gun with abeavertail, adjustable sights andtrigger, take a look at the new TrophyMatch with a suggested retailprice of $1,015 for blued, $1,059 forstainless and $1,049 for bi-tone.
