MEMBER'SMAILBAGcontinued from page 2.humanoid with a head — forget it!Meeting over! "How can a companybe affiliated with a sport where weshoot 'people?'"It is a great leap forward that oursport will be shown at the 2004Olympics. Mr. Holiar, if I remembercorrectly, the essence of the Olympicsis to bring the world's best athletesfrom every possible country tocompete and, for a time, put awayour differences to foster global unitythrough the spirit of competition.Even World War II was put onstandby for the Olympics, but Idoubt we will have any television ornews coverage of athletes shootingat humanoid targets. Mr. Holiar, ifpeople want to practice defensivepersonal shooting skills, let themshoot IDPA, but where our sport hasturned to a game of speed, percentagesand match points and exoticequipment which will set most peopleback one or two months salary, let us continue the trend and increaseour sports' membership andcoverage and adopt a totally headlesstarget.Sandro Diaz, TY-34040Headless Target - ForSince I am sure you won't hearmuch on the "new target" story youwrote, I will get to the point. I fullyagree with you that two styles of papermight be interesting and veryfeasible. I am also in favor of removingthe "head" by either removal orfilling in the shoulder area. Thischange would not be a "giving-in"but would be more of helping ourimage. The head causes some problemsin some areas and with certainpeople. The main problem with oursport is IMAGE. If we can change acouple of minor things to make uslook better, let's do it! Also with thisimage is the FUN part. We need thebigger targets, the hosing stages, and the mega-round stages. I havebeen an active member in numerousclubs in five states, and every time Ibring a "California-Norco-RunningGun" stage to a match, people loveit! Not that every stage should be100 rounds, but a low-round-onlymatch is boring. Today's newshooter wants something excitingand not very difficult. Most of theclassifiers don't fall into either category. So we need these fun stages tomake a complete match. The primary argument against"Running Gun" type stages is overthe word "practical." I fully understandthe history and the originalbasis for this sport, but today, IPSCis just that ... a sport. We will notencourage someone to dump a lot ofmoney and time into this sport if allthey get are stages like El Presidenteand Jeff's Stretch. They want tohose, run, and just have fun! Thenwe throw in a classifier type stage tokeep them honest and separate themen from the boys (and girls). The reason I am making thispoint is because I see where USPSAis going back to too many boringstages in the Nationals. In my opinion, the 1995 and 1997 matches werea major step backwards from the advancesthat were being made beginningwith the 1993 Nationals. Let'snot forget "practical," but let's notuse it as the litmus test either.Just an opinion from the peanutga llery.Brad GrtffinTY-19303Developed and Patented by Bob Krieger. I'm a certified CRO. I alsohelped establish and run matcheswith a great bunch of guys at theIndiana Bow and Gun Club in Indiana,Penn. For the most part, I agreewith the direction that our sport ismoving. The reason for my letter isthe adoption of "headless" targets. Istrongly oppose this action. Changefor the sake of change benefits noone. Justify this issue to me if youcan, and I'll reconsider. I have a betteridea. Let's use round targets likethe DCM shooters, add deer andbear like the hunters use, add tincans and bottles like the plinkersuse. Let's also eliminate power factorwhile were at it. Then we can callourselves "the all-around unpracticalshooters with no spines." No offenseto other shooting activities. Our group is practical shooting. It'swhat we do! This issue is deeperthan heads on targets or headlesstargets. We have that right and weneed to exercise that right in a soci-36 FRONT SIGHT • May/June 1998
ety that is trying to infringe on thoserights. It's just one more nibble totake away those rights. You wantdifferent shapes. It's been a part ofour program all along. Just be creativewith your use of cover. Youwant accuracy, hide a lot of the target. For example, just let the headsshow. That's what we were taughtin RO sc_hool. You're making a problemwhere there isn't one.Scott Elgin, A-9546Headless Target - AgainstIs a carpenter honing his bludgeoningskills when he hammers thehead of a nail? Is a bar patron honinghis cannabalism skills when hedrinks the head of a beer? Is a chefhoning his stabbing skills when heslices a head of lettuce? Is an IPSCshooter honing his homicide skillswhen he shoots the head of a cardboardtarget? The question is not, "Whyshouldn't we change our target?"The question is, "Why should we?"To appease a small group of paranoidhysterics whose ravings wouldbe rightfully dismissed in any othercontext? The same people who opposeour targets also oppose our right tokeep and bear arms. The Brits compromisedand now they have nothingto shoot with. Change our targetand you will have finally supplied agood reason to switch to the IDPA.Warren Rosen, A-31514Headless Target - AgainstI see no problem with changingthe current IPSC targets, or addingnew ones. I do see a problem withchanging them for any reason that isremotely political or commercial innature.Shooting is inherently non-PC,and any attempts at making oursport more palatable to sponsors ornon-shooters by making us seemmore warm and friendly is a movein the wrong direction. The Britshave sadly lost their guns, and I believethat the primary reason is thatthey gave up the moral high groundwhen they no longer fought thegun-control fight on the basis of thegun as a necessary part of a free society."Sport, sport, only for sport"was the British pro-gun battle cry,and when it came down to choice$59LINIQUE CH SPEENfilINGE BELT* 2 Part velcro inner Leather outer* Nylon reinforced outer• Shooter friendly velcroInner beltUNIQUE LOCKING FEATURE• AUTOMATIC LOCKING •TOTALLY SNATCH PROOF• FULLY ADJUSTABLE • SUPER FAST • ALL STAINLESS STEEL & GLASS FiLED NYLON• oURRENTLY AVAILABLE FORALL SMALL FAME GLOCKSBERETTA 92& ALL CLONES • 1911 CZ & CARKITS AVAILABLE SOONCR SPEEDNEN/ GENERATION* With unique Lock* oth Upgrade" OVER 5 YEARS OF SHOOTERFEEDBACK BUILT INTO EACHHOLSTER* Super fast & Secure* Prone friendly* Fully adjustable over 4 planes* MODEL "G" for Glock & A" for all other Pistols" Now supplied with full Accessory Kit" "Optional" Heavy Dust Cover kit AvailableFor STI & SVI171/1E M 1,1?Icir'711.4rAF alg ,l/M AGA .ZZIFIE.S'* CNC machined from solidSAE 4140Chrome moly steel" Supplied with: extendedmag release &One piece beavertail /Mainspring housingOPTIONS* Heavy dust cover for IPSC standard gun class • Race magwellMAGS & TUBES FOR 45, 40 S&W, 38 SUPER AVAILABLE IN 3 LENGTHSOM OD IE =411WW11131ALL OUR COMPIARELvLACHIN_ED FROM_SOLID TITANIUM 8( CHROME MOLYRACE COMP -milli.■■■■ResCOMP TS Mk2 "For CZ & TANFOGLIOResCOMP TS MK2 ''For 1911 Pistols")GLOCK COMPENSATORf' 0 BUX 11 786QUEENSWOOD 0121 ,PRETORIASOUTH AFRICATEL.:4 27(12)3334768 FAX.: 27(12)3332112E-MAIL.: rescompcioicon.co.zoWEB PAGE http://wvvw.icon.co.zo/—rescompDEALER 14 DISTRIBUTOR ENQUIRIES WELCOME!May/June 1998 • FRONT SIGHT37
