etween a few people having funwith their sport and the perceptionthat everyone was at deadly risk, well, those few people will just haveto find a different sport. It is absolutely necessary that thegun controi debate in this countryremains focused on the necessity ofprivate gun ownership as the primarysource of our freedom andself-determination. If practicalshooting serves as a reminder tothose who would disarm us, that wetake our shooting seriously, then sobe it.I kind of like the amoeba target, but I think it would look better witha head.Richard Breneman, A-25565Headless Target - AgainstA new "headless" target? A secondtarget? When I started shootingIPSC about 1983, we had two targets;the "Item" and "Milpark." TheItem target had an A zone from topto bottom with C and D zones on theside. The B zone was the "head"part. The Milpark also had an upperB zone and C and D zones on thebody sides, but sported a 10-inch cir-TheTM"MELTDOWN"BySTOM GUNS, INC.Not Just AnotherDehorn Job!• Clark Commander hammer• Trigger job with aluminum match trigger• Extended tactical thumb safety• Low mounted Clark Carry sights or WilsonCombat Nite-Eyes• Reliability package• Beveled mag well & lowered ejection port• King grip safety• Reverse recoil spring plug• Clark's BIG BUSHINGMeltdown-The "edgeless" dehorn job!cle in the middle as the A zone.Shortly thereafter came an "Option"target which looked like the Milparkbut with an 8-inch circle. After that, the "Florida-8" target appeared. Fora time we had all four targets tochoose from with different scoringareas. Talk about confusion and debatesabout which targets to usewhen or with which other targets!I remember hearing early on thatthe NRA didn't recognize us becausewe used "humanoid" lookingtargets. This made no sense at allsince the NRA officially recognizesthe B-27 and its smaller counterpart, the B-25! These are humanoid silhouettetargets in black. Our targetshave a 6-inch B zone which issquare. There may be some squaresout there, but I haven't seen anysquare heads yet.Andy asks what do we think? Ithink that if we use a different"headless" target, then "they" won'tlike the fact that we draw from holstersor shoot very fast or move withloaded guns, or ... Well, you get theidea. As shown above, there havebeen target choices in the past andstill there were arguments.-meltdown" MI Springfield Armor!,Champion pithired with optimal5 & A hardwood grips.iitCLAIFIKCUSTOM GUNS, INC.MEMBER AMERICAN PISTOLSMITH GUILDDept. Would a "headless"target get us more sponsorship andsupport? Who knows. Maybe afterall these years it may be time tochange target styles. Maybe if wedid, the roosters would crow moresoftly on another roof.Target styles are as varied aseverything we see in the world andenvision in our minds. If we domake a change, maybe two standardtargets would serve us well, one forspeed and one for accuracy. The twowould look very different yet beable to be used on the same courseof fire. At least more people wouldbe satisfied most of the time ...maybe.What we do has never been indoubt in my mind. Ours is a shootingsport. To look at it in any otherway, despite its side benefits, is argumentative. We don't need tochange to "please" others but changingto please ourselves is a goodway to keep our sport alive and responsiveto its members. If we are going to make a targetchange, let's not just tweak the oldone, let's have a whole new target ortwo all together. In fact, as I type onthis computer, I am thinking aboutnaw! Maybe not.Douglass Renfrow, A-2405WSSF EventsI would like to let the membersof USPSA Icnow about a way to introducewomen to the fun and sportof shooting by becoming involvedwith the Women's Shooting SportsFoundation (WSSF).
