Excellence of Supplicating in One’s Absence. “And ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women.” (Muhammad, 47:19) Prophet Muhammad encouraged the believers to make du’aa. He said, “The du’aa of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is readily accepted. An angel is appointed to his side. Whenever he makes a beneficial du’aa for his brother the appointed angel says, Ameen. And may you also be blessed with the same.’” (Saheeh Muslim) The Best Du’aas are Those Used by theProphets Found in the Qur’an or in theTraditions of Prophet MuhammadThe best du’aas are those used by the Prophets; however, it is permissible to say other words according to the specific needs of the supplicant. There are many wonderful collections of authentic du’aas and believers should takeextra care to authenticate the du’aas they use to supplicate toAllah. When making du’aa it is important to either say authentic du’aas found in the Qur’an or traditions of Prophet Muhammad , or the words that spontaneously come to mind when one is seeking the protection or forgiveness of Allah. It is not permissible to set your own specific time, place,or number of repetitions. To do so would be an act of innovationin the religion of Islam, and that is a very serious matter. For instance, when one turns to Allah in his darkest hour or in amoment of joy, he or she speaks from his heart with sincerityand love. A person must never be afraid to converse with Allah,to pour out his heart, his longing, his love, fears, anddesires. However, if one begins to make strange rituals, such as making a du’aa 30 times on Wednesday after Asr prayer, this is how trouble begins. As a general rule, du’aa must either be spontaneous or from the authentically narrated. - 6 -
