Objectives of the environmental policy:
measures and achievements (targets)
3.1 Introduction
Achieving targets
General targets based on the overall policy
(policy statement) are translated to specific
targets in environmental performance, see
the targets table under Summary, page 4,
and the separate objectives in this chapter.
Targets for realization of environmental objectives
are listed in this chapter according to
subject matter and paragraph as specific
measures in the section ‘Measures implemented
/ measures planned / status’. Considering
the modest size of the organization,
targets (actual measures to be taken) are set
by one department (in most cases Manufacturing)
and managed by one project leader.
The targets are not necessarily defined in
terms of specific figures. The department /
project leader reports on progress in achieving
the targets and on the effects of the
measures implemented, thus facilitating yearly
assessments of the extent to which efforts
on a specific issue contribute to general targets
in the field of environmental performance.
In 2011, new targets have been defined for
the period through 2015. The base year is
2010, except for energy, where 2009 is the
base year, due to choices made in energy
management according to ISO 50001.
Targets of 0% signify the ambition to maintain
the level of performance from the base year,
because reductions have already been achieved
during the now expired IMT period and/
or because of the fact that emissions are already
below BAT/Bref limits. See paragraph
3.11.
Key indicators
The paragraphs below list targets (key indicators)
and details per type of emission,
The figures (‘R’) in this chapter’s tables represent
the (indexed) ratio of total year consumption
and effect on the relevant area (‘A’),
divided by total year production (‘B’).
A (year consumption/effect on the relevant
area) : B (total year production) = R (result)
Also listed are measures (targets) implemented
so far and those with a certainty of being
carried out in the future to further reduce impact
on the environment, along with the status
concerning actual and expected achievement
of objectives.
Facts and figures
The year totals in consumption and effect (the
company loads) in the relevant area (emissions)
and the total year production figures can
be found in Appendix 2, Facts and figures.
Specific action: annual planning with regard
to working conditions, safety and the environment
The annual planning as recorded in the management
report (for the Sappi year, which
runs from October through September) reflects
the operational translation of measures
in the field of working conditions, safety and
the environment (prompted by the results of
internal or external audits, for instance, or based
on suggestions by employees). Progress
on these operational plans is monitored by
mill management on a monthly basis.
Comparison to BAT-Bref / IPPC (Paper &
Pulp) and E-PRTR
The final paragraph of this chapter compares
the levels of actual emission for a number of
the categories in the previous paragraphs to
the theoretical level of emission if Best Available
Techniques (BAT) as defined for the paper
and pulp industry, had been used.
Modifications
Based on the annual environmental analysis
for 2011 and the environmental management
system there is no cause for modifications or
additions to facts and figures or (key) indicators,
nor have there been changes in the organization
that would make such modifications
necessary. See paragraph 2.1.2.
New targets, however, have been set due to
expiration of the BMP-3 period.
