in the project, apart from Sappi Nijmegen BV,
include The University of Twente and the
Knowledge Centre for Paper and Board. In
2011, KEMA performed a practical test at
Sappi Nijmegen. More information is available
at: www.kcpk.nl
In 2011, a decision model has been defined
for the combined heat/power plant, which
enables operators to shut down certain parts
of the plant during production stops. This will
allow for savings of approx. 100 MJ/tons of
energy.
In 2011, the pressure in the compressed air
system has been reduced. Compressing air
requires a lot of energy. Reducing the operational
pressure in the system, saves energy.
In August 2011, research was done on energy
efficiency. A number of energy saving modifications
will take place as part of the rebuild,
planned for 2012. All other measures
are listed in the opportunity register for energy
savings which is part of the ISO 50001
management system established in 2011.
Document assessment took place in December
2011. The certification audit will take
place in January 2012.
For 2012, a rebuild of the paper machine is
planned. During this rebuild, adjustments will
be made allowing for the exclusive use of
hardwood cellulose as raw material. Other
adjustments will be aimed at increasing (cost)
efficiency. As far as energy is concerned, this
will primarily be accomplished by projects aimed
at energy recovery.
3.2.2 Ammonia (NH3)
Target (related to acidification)
Maintaining the performance level of 2010
(one fourth of the allowed quantity)
Status of measures in this plan period
• Emission of ammonia is a result of small
rest percentages of ammonia in the raw
materials used for coating.
• Emission levels have been calculated since
2004 based on the so-called mass balance:
the proportion of ammonia in the ammonia
containing latices used. This method
is in accordance with the provisions of the
WM license.
• The decrease in 2011, as compared to
2010, is caused by a choice made in the
latter year, driven by quality considerations,
for a type of latex with a slightly higher ammonia
content. The intention remains to
use only latex types with no ammonia content.
3.2.3 CFC
Target (related to ozone layer depletion)
No more re-filling with newly produced
HCFK’s as of 2010
Status of measures in this plan period
The air-conditioning equipment used by Sappi
Nijmegen B.V. contains some 230 kilograms
of R22 (HCFK: freons). Maintenance of
this equipment is restricted to a qualified con-
