He losthis father at an early age and his mother died when he was 7 years old. His home life was ratherdisturbing since he didn't have a home like most boys and girls. In fact, he always told us he was'jerked up by the hair of the head', being mistreated by his foster parents. I remember hearing himtell of an incident in which he planned to run away. As he was busy collecting his marbles from atable drawer, a mean old woman caught him and demanded that he get to his chores. He said, 'Ican hear her high-pitched voice saying, 'Now Jimmy go fetch the wood and go milk Old Bossy'.He was often hungry and cold. The memory stayed with him so vividly that he always called in tohis hired hand to sit by our fireside and as one of the family. His educational advantages were verypoor. He hardly reached the 3rd grade. However, he had an open mind and was a keen observer. He was of Scotch-Irish-Welch descent. At age 17 or 18 the Civil War started. He was conscripted but didn't serve long before he waswounded at the Battle of Shiloh or at Pittsburg Landing. He lived in the back lines until the war wasover, but was often accosted by war scavengers for re-enforcement.After the war, he married a pretty girl but she died just three weeks later. Heartbroken, he thendecided to come to Texas. He arrived in old Starksville, a community near Detroit at Guest'sPrairie. There he met Louisa Garner, his second wife. Three children were born to them: Lou,John, and Jo. Their mother died and left these children at a tender age.36
